New GBD pipes

Muddler's picture

My head unhooked a little while back. I spotted a heap of GBD pipes on Ebay & bought no less than 7 of them! The prices were good, I think. The story was that these pipes had lain in a backroom of an art shop in Lima, Peru for years - as in since the 50's. They are, of course, unsmoked. The pipes are old era GBD's - before the take-over & quality descent that afflicted them from 1981. Prior to that the pipes were made in France. Well, they arrived today. The most delicate (apart from the bulldog - there are no delicate bulldogs), thin-stemmed, small bowl pipes, so remininscent of my Dunhills. Several of them had little French leaflets (not letters) in their bowls. One had a guarantee brochure (in French), explaining that one should relax, smoke these pipes slowly & that they are good for a half hour smoke. Delightful. In size they are probably 3 1/2. The wood is superb, quite free of blemish.

So here I am, puffing happily away, breaking them in on OJK & Morley's Best, with a smile on my face wide enough to park a limo in. I firmly believe Burley's are best for breaking pipes in. And what excuse does one need anyway. National Joy Day.

Congrats, good score. OMG seven pipes in one fell swoop. Come on. Admit it, you must have gotten a smack across the chops for that move.

Nice Pipes

Seven at a time! And unsmoked to boot! My wife spazzed when my Chrishill arrived. (I don't think to this day she believes that BS story about a guy from MPC that lives in Rhode Island that just one day decided to send me a beautiful handmade pipe.) If a box of seven showed up I'm pretty sure I'd get the stink eye for a couple weeks but with pipes like that who cares! That's a battle I would gladly fight. Ya done good young Muddler (now go burn some OJK in one of them beauties whilst catching a few trout.)

I'm looking at your fine acquisitions, and I'm certain that you moved with the precision of a neurosurgeon to snatch them from the Ebay blackhole. Well done! And, classic shapes in great condition laying about for years, which, sadly doesn't speak well to Peruvian pipesmokers' acumen, does it? Considering that these pipes are from the '50s, great styling and craftsmanship, makes me all the more long for that Golden Age of pipesmoking.

Good eye. Smoke them in peace, M.

If you're sharp - the same guy is currently offering a small batch of GBD's on ebay. I'm watching two. Good luck, if you're interested. The last batch went for around $50 a piece fwiw.

Congrats on the acquisition(s)

Edit:

Just saw the pics ... now thats what a pipe is supposed to look like! Especially that bottom one in the first pic ... I don't normally go for slightly bent pipes but that one wowwed me. Way to go M.
