ABBREVIATIONS ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY

RickPiatt's picture

Sorry for shouting.

All the abbreviations we're using here are driving me crazy. I can't keep track of them all anymore. Honestly sometimes I read a thread and have no idea what you're all talking about. Can we PLEASE use this thread to list (and continue to list) the various abbreviations we've been using so I can have a small chance of understanding whats going on around here?

Here's the ones I use:

PSLNF = Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake
FVF = Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake
BBF = Samuel Gawith's Best Brown Flake
BB#2 = Gawith & Hoggarth's Best Brown #2
PA = Prince Albert
CH = Carter Hall
LOL = Laugh out loud
ROTFLMAO = Roll on the floor laughing my a$$ off
MacB = Mac Baren
SG = Samuel Gawith
G&H = Gawith & Hoggarth
Dunnie = Dunhill
KW = Kawyoodie
Pete = Peterson

Ok ... your turn (pretty please)

=================
Edit: just remembered a few more

IMO = In My Opinion
IIRC = If I Remember Correctly (or If I Recall Correctly)
Yak = Yuck, Poohey, Oh my gosh how can anyone like that!
Meh! / Feh! = I'm not impressed, mediocre, nothing to write home about.

================
2nd Edit: Tobacco types

VA = Virginia Tobacco
VA/Per = Virginia / Perique Blend
VA/Bur = Virginia / Burley blend (more VA than Burley)
Bur/VA = Virginia / Burley Blend (more Burley than VA)
VA/O = Virginia / Oriental
Lat = Latakia
Aro = Aromatic

================
3rd Edit after reading GIs

IMNSHO = In My Not So Humble Opinion (haven't used that in a long time!)

I wanted

Olivier's picture

to bring up this issue a couple of times. What is it with Americans and abbreviations? They seem to be able to downsize a fullpage of babble to only one sentence that rarely makes sense anyway.;) Also they think up new ones as the go along. As soon as you figured out the meaning of one there's three new ones that's even more mindboggling.

Jeez I give up. Need 2 take my k9 for a p.

Oh that was priceless

Took me a while to decipher (I don't abbreviate while texting).

But, I had imagined a completely different text for those abbreviations. Now I have to read every post over again since I joined to make sure I understand what the hell we were talking about.

I generally try not to abbreviate, as well. But here is one of my favorites:

"IBUWANNASMOKEALOT" = African for: "I really would like to smoke my pipe today very much, thankyou!"

This was my shorthand this morning when...

Captain Bob's picture

I received my ATC clearance for my flight to Chicago (Du Page County Airport, St Charles, IL) prior to taxi...

N596BC CDPAAF FRH CM60 E100 10 >D 126.3 3036

This came at me like lightening (as usual) but I was ready with pen in hand. After reading back my clearance correctly I heard the magic words: "Readback correct, contact ground when ready to taxi." And, I reponded...

Cessna Five-Niner-Six, Roger.

The clearance reads: November five niner six, you are cleared to DuPage airport, as filed, fly runway heading, climb and maintain six thousand, expect one zero thousand (10,000 feet) one zero (ten) minutes after departure, Departure frequency 126.3, Sqwak code 3036 (on the transponder for radar identification).

This was a very easy clearance because I was cleared-as-filed and no route changes (that sh!t came later when I was up to my a!s in aligators, rough air, on instruments and in clouds)!

Sh!t, I don't know why I work so hard, I already got the job!

Thanks for this post, Rick, now when I don't know what people here are talking about I can just type "abbreviations" into the search, and look it up!

So much for keeping this post on target

RickPiatt's picture

I'd say this post is pretty much useless now for future reference. It was a good idea but ... well ...

I'll edit the original post eventually and just ignore all the other stuff for future reference ... ugh.

Ahhh, I remember the day

Thomas Martin's picture

I had to ask what POS meant.

Yes here on MPC I learned POS=Piece of Shit.

I felt like crap.

Is this excreting abbriviations?

PA in a #2,

Tom

Tom dude,

ckr's picture

its not just farm talk and it is not just here on MPC. POS is POS anywhere. Ah, unless your in the retail biz, then it is Point of Sale or maybe some scientific brain or somthin where it would be Probility of Success. If your George Dubawa it was the code name for Piss Off Sadam.

Rick, sorry this thread has taken a life of its own, but if it is any consolation to ya, it was intentional.

What the hell is B&M?

Ah, B&M

Quaffer's picture

You know, it takes very little time to figure out most of the tobacco related acronyms and abbreviations on this site. However, B&M stumped me for quite awhile. It stands for brick and mortar and refers to the local pipe and tobacco storefront shop that you actually visit (e.g., I went to my B&M this afternoon and . . . ). This is opposed to a virtual, online store.

I guess an online store would be a B&B (bits and bytes).

Now I get it. You came through for me Quaffer and I thank you. It takes a while but I am getting the hang of the lingo.

I thought...

I thought the online stores were always just called e-tailers...though I could imagine C&P...for code and pictures...though I think the tried and true is better...

Cheers,
