The benefits of being stubborn
I've written here before about my Stanwell HCA V Collector's Edition. The darn thing from the first bowl smoked hotter than heck. So hot it would scald your hands to touch the bowl no matter how slowly I smoked it (and I'm a real slow smoker). Something about that pipe said "don't give up on me". I listened and have worked with it for well over a year, possibly closer to two years now. I switched its diet over to Burleys to build cake faster than VAs would. It liked that a lot. Instant cool down ... still not good, but better. I worked and worked and really took my time with many a bowl and now I proudly report that it finally smokes reasonably cool (as long as I don't rush it). In fact two nights ago I fed it some VA for the first time since I switched it over to Burley and although I thought it would be hot again, it handled it wonderfully. I'm so glad I didn't give up on this pipe. In fact, now I find I have a special attachment to it since I really have worked so long and hard to make it a good smoker. I suspect if you ask me about this pipe two years from now it'll be an excellent smoker. Man ... lesson learned: sometimes ya gotta stick with a pipe and work it to make it work for you! I did and I'm so glad I did.

Many of the nice pipes I have had ...
...some, over thirty years, spent a lot of time being displayed and not smoked. It wasn't until I switched from Half and Half to Cornell & Diehl tobacco's that I tried them again and have found most of them to be excellent smoker's. I think the tobacco has a lot to do with a good smoking pipe.
Rick, I received your Three Star Blue in the mail today. Thank you! Would you have any interest in trying Captain Bob's Blend? Unflavored? Flavored? Some of each? If so, let me know. I can use the same box to send it to you. Don't worry, my feelings won't be hurt if you don't.
Here's what's in my blend: Red VA, Black Cav; Carolina Brights; Latakia; Perique and Turkish. The Latakia is very light so that you just know it is there. The Cav is unflavored Green River Burley. Overall, it is a smooth VA/Burley mix with a touch of Latakia for spice. The Perique and Turkish provide a slight "cooling" sensation to the tongue. Aroma and taste is good with or without flavor. With flavor, a very light grape, does not cover the tobacco taste but adds a touch of sweetness to aroma and taste. Good either way.

Unflavored: Sure! --- Grapes: absolutely no way.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't apprehensive Bob. I've said before that I've never met a C&D blend that I've liked. Furthermore, I'm not a Perique fan and you know my feelings about Black Cavendish in any appreciable amount. But I won't know unless I try right? So I'll go for it ... just a little please ... a few bowls is more than enough (few = 3 not 30 ok?!!!) Now ... grapes ... well, they're for eating not smoking so please, pretty please for heaven's sake don't send me any grapes *LOL*.
Regarding the Three Star Blue, I'm glad to pass it on to ya since you like it so much.

Look Out
You just KNOW Bob is gonna slip you the grape flavored stuff and not tell you. He's a tricky one.

Bear in mind...
It is unflavored Black Cav Rick, so the non-grape variety should be of no issue. You might be surprised to know how many blends have unflavored black cav in them, and maybe even ones that you smoke. MUAH HA HA HA HA !!!

Ok, Rick...
... Here's the deal... I already had the box packed and ready to mail in the morning before seeing your response. I'm not gonna break the seal now. There are two small containers inside the box. They are both labeled "Captain Bob's Blend".
You will have to decide which one has the grape sauce and which one is unflavored! For your sake, I hope you pick the right one.

... to have Rick taste test CBB. It's kinda like shaking hands with a rock star! I await with great anticipation his critical review. Knowing Rick, I can expect an impartial, unbiased critical review. After all, he is the most objective pipe smoker I have ever known. He has absolutely no bias concerning any tobacco leaf or, for that matter, aromatics. This may be the biggest moment of my life!
It is going out UPS in the morning.
By the way, I think this Forum Topic Title is the perfect place for Rick to place his review... "The Benefits of Being Stubborn".

You'll be OK
From looking at the formula, I see CBB is not sullied with even a hint of the plebian low bush burley. Although he may be inclined to systematically remove every speck of perique he can visually identify ;)

Beauty!
Got to love tactical deception. CBB is not, I say all again slowly, not, VFR :)

I sprayed all of the tobacco for each container "purple" (as in grapes) and there is no way he will be able to identify even the Black Cavendish. However, the very faint smell of paint might cover up the grape sauce enough that he won't be able to tell which of the two containers contains the grape aromatic. Both one ounce containers look absolutely identical. We'll see how good his sniffer is. If he writes a great review, I may be on my way to success after the years of work I put into this blend.

Oh my, what have I gotten myself into
I ... uh ... umm ... oh wtf.
Well at least I know it was given with a good heart.
egads.
does this mean I have to buy a 7" canadian to smoke it in? Do cobs come that big?

Worry not RP,
I will suffer along with you and take a bowl of each off your hands. BTW, how does Saturday look for an over the bridge excursion into the EG B&M?
Fume in pace, ckr
Just know that
the entire MPC is holding its breath, waiting to find out what you think of the famous CBB. Personally, I'm thrilled that Bob snuck some of the aro stuff in. Let the games begin...
PS. My money is on you guys liking it. Bob's taste in baccy runs to C&D stuff - RB etc. There's no way it can be junk.
Mike I'll gladly send ya some
I'll keep the unflavored and you can dance with the grapes!
