Deal of the Century ?

Sparks's picture

Well, we stopped at the Antique co-op this afternoon, and usually there are never any pipes. Today, there were 3 stands that had pipes though. Not alot to choose from, except one...

It is a 4 digit Kaywoodie, and I am going to guess, it is pretty damn old. Any help would be appreciated. Nomenclature reads as follows:

KBB Logo, next to it:
Drinkless
Kaywoodie

Opposite side of shank has:
Suntan
Algerian Briar
Rock Ambera
7297

Bottom of shank:
Synchrostem
Pat. App. For

Stem has black Kaywoodie Logo on top.

Screw in stem, 4 hole stinger.

I know the KBB logo is usually on very old Kaywoodies, but not sure of the exact date range. Either way, it is a great little pipe. Well taken care of, though the nomenclature is a bit worn. Needs a good cleaning, but it will stay in my collection, even though it is not a Dublin. Why do I think it is the deal of the century... well, it set me back a whopping $5.

That is what it was marked at. The owners of the stand were actually not even there, the co-op runs all of the shops when the individual vendors are not present. The tag said it, I could not pass it up.

Seriously, though, everything that I know about Kaywoodies (which is not very much) puts that pipe somewhere in the mid-30s to early 40s range. Nice find, my man.

72** Drinkless Kaywoodie, rock ambera synchro-stem, Suntan finish (mid-30s-early 40s)

You Stole That One For Sure Sparks

1OLDGI's picture

In the four digit system, the first two digits indicate finish and the second two indicate shape. 72 would indicate a Suntan Finish with Rock Ambera Bit. This finish was made from 1931-1938. The 97 indicates a squat apple, slim shank long bit. This shape was made only one year 1935. However conflicting information says that the "synchrostem patent applied for pipes" with KBB on the shank were made before 1932 but not prior to 1929. This coupled with the volume of etchings on the pipe would lead me to believe that your pipe was made in the Union City NJ factory prior to the move of their production facility in 1932 or 1933 (after that the extra etchings were toned down to speed production). The shape numbers notwithstanding, I think your pipe is from the 1929-1932 era, a great old classic (which you should almost be ashamed of taking for only $5) of course as with all classic KWs, tobacco smoked in this American icon should ONLY be codger burlies. If you find this one hideously deformed or horribly burdened with technical inadequacies, let me know and I'll give you at least $15 for it.

Thats good news...

Thanks Oldgi, I kinda figured I snagged a good one, but even better than I expected. I will be keeping it for sure, and one I get it cleaned up a bit, I will post some more pictures.

This pipe will see nothing but old school tobacco. I think it will be dedicated to Walnut and maybe Carter Hall.

It's a nice pipe and all but

Danish_Pipe_Guy's picture

It's a nice pipe and all but likely not the deal of the century.Below you'll see a 1949 Dunhill "P" patent # shell briar bulldog that was likely smoked once at most.It was also found at a local antique store for a "fiver"....

And if I were to take it one

Danish_Pipe_Guy's picture

And if I were to take it one step further, the Dunhill bulldog above REALLY was'nt the "deal of the century" compared to what a buddy of mine found roughly ten years ago. While at an outdoor flea market in Eastern Ma came upon a 1926 Dunhill 120 bent blast magnum for $2.00!He later sold it for $3,000.00 to a pipes dealer. Then there's the lady who went to a church tag sale in upstate NY this Spring and found the larget Dunhill magnum ever known to exist for $1.00!It's an enormous blasted paneled billiard with a 4" tall bowl! (I've had the chance to see it myself and it's beyond amazing!)The woman who bought it listed it on e-bay where collector Rich Esserman's bid of $6,000.00+ won the pipe! That would likely qualify as "the TRUE deal of the century"!...

Best,
D.J.

Figure of speech ?

Sparks's picture

Last time I checked, but I appreciate you sharing your "better" deal stories with us. Personally, I'll take the Kaywoodie over the Dunghill any day (no offense Rick). Either way, I'm quite happy with my find.

By the way, glad to see your not too busy with your other forum anymore.

Thanks for the warm welcome back sparky.Though I AM busy with my other forum I still make a point to read the posts here almost every day as I have been doing since the 1st day that this fine forum went online.I always like to keep "up on the neighbors" sort of speak.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying those kaywoodies. If you DO happen to come by any "dunghills" on the cheap, please drop me a line.I don't like them much either but they sure do bring good money on e-bay...

Best,
D.J.

No apoligy required!

If you love Kaywoodies as much as I love Dunhills I'm sure you'll be a happy man when you light that baby up. Its not about the brand, its about the enjoyment we get from them.

Friend Sparks

morleysson's picture

with that find, while it may not yet be the deal of the century, it certainly is the best that I've encountered in years. You did very well, and showed an astute eye for the quality product. I, personally, would be as happy as a pig in new dirt, and that would be very happy!. You have shown wisdom in wanting to expose such a fine piece to only the elderly's tobaccos. You will be rewarded for such kindness by the Pipe gods.

Seriously, you captured a fine pipe. They snooze, they lose, but you didn't.

After your rather hasty and dramatic departure, I was worried that we would never see you again. I see you are slowly working your way back into the fold though.

Although I may be young, I'm no dummy. I might not have any desire to own one, but I assure you, if I come across one "on the cheap" you will be sure to see it on Ebay. Mama didn't raise no fool.

No worries here sparky....I make it a habit to check each and every pipes related forum at least once a day butI comment only when I feel the need to.Perhaps it is time that I "work my way back into the fold" here if only for the spirited debates alone....

Being a relatively successful salesman myself I can tell you that it's VERY hard to sell/represent something that you don't feel pasionately about.....

That's a kickass looking

slartie's picture

That's a kickass looking pipe you got there, Justin. Congrats!

I really should start paying more attention to the countless Kaywoodie auctions on eBay even though I'm not at all comfortable with the whole thing. I love Kaywoodies and would like to own more of them. Right now the only Kaywoodie I have, is a 2005 POY. It's a big ol' chunk of briar weighing in at 3.5oz. For the same reason, it doesn't get smoked very often.

As a Bayonet collector, I truly know what it feels like getting something that no one has a clue about, or even selling as a sword/knife.

The thing that is better with a pipe is, you actually get to use it :)

If you like it, smoke it.

I think people get a little to snobby sometimes about this hobby and have forgotten what's it's all about. Sit back, enjoy and forget what brand of pipe it is. Sure, some pipes historically smoke better than others, but a lot of that depends on the tobacco you're smoking as well.

Right On Brother

1OLDGI's picture

An odd feature of the human condition really, one man's trash is another man's treasure. If your treasure happens to be Dunghill then rock on with your bad self. Me? I'd trade every Dunghill ever made for Sparks' KBB 4 digit. Folks just seem to be product loyal and while your brand and my brand may not be the same, that's entirely your privelege. This is just like any other friendly (or not so friendly) product loyalty debate I suppose. Dunghill vs. Kaywoodie, Burley vs. Virginia, Chevy vs. Ford, Harley vs. Jap Bike,Ginger vs. Mary Ann,it's all about personal choice and if we disagree then so be it. I'm not the poor unfortunate sap with a Dunghill plugged into my mush, scorching my tongue on some horrid Virginia weed, driving down the street in a POS Chevy, with my broke ass Hardly Ableson in the back, daydreaming about that trashy overpainted harlot Ginger Grant. In the end we all live with and become very comfortable with our choices, so I may kid the Dunghill crowd but in the end, I have the utmost respect for them for making their own choices even amid the disenting voices. All that said, if there's a better combination than a four digit Kaywoodie and a classic American (codger) burley, I've yet to see it in nearly a half century meandering the planet. YMMV
