You and I are the only ones awake, being quite a bit east of America.
I find DGT works great with VA from Rattray and McLelland. Marlin Flake is a favorite of mine for this. I tried it with other blends (typically a burley smoker) and it was usually not very pleasant. This was expected- a day-old cigar is enough to make most people swear off cigar smoking! What wasn't expected was my accidental DGT of Marlin Flake. Later I read this is sometimes done on purpose and so I began doing it occaisionally.
intentionally, it is usually a morning smoke that is going extend into the work day that is just placed down for when I get off. Since reading some of Tom's posts I have found that there is a bit more to this than initially meets the eye.
I don't do it on purpose, but sometimes I'll put down a half smoked pipe and light it later. I have gotten some good flavors out of burley as well as Virginias.
I have used DGT from time to time, but only because I got sidetracked for some reason. When I come back and relight, I have noticed a change in flavor - some blends change for the better, and far more, for the worse.
I can see how some people like to DGT a blend - me? I just can't be patient for that long :) I'd rather spend the time smoking more bowls of whatever blend of the week I have.
For some reason, when I am enjoying some Blackwoods Flake I tend to let my pipe go out half way into the bowl and move to another pipe and tobacco.
Later on I will revisit the Blackwoods flake and enjoy a whole richer flavor. I think that the heat, smoke etc. is enhancing the tobacco as it burns. Leaving it to rest allows the unsmoked tobacco to mellow, thus producing the richer flavor.
Just my thoughts.
My definition of DGTing was just putting the pipe aside for another time. Tom's post fully describing how it all began was very enlightening. I believe I'll try it that way with some VAs to see how it is. I can say this however, just putting a VA aside whether it be for a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few days has always been a treat for me. Most of the VAs I smoke do well with this treatment. I consider that a huge plus given that I often don't always have time for a full bowl. Anyway ... do I DGT? Yes, sort of (before Tom's post I would have emphatically said YES).
Only VAs seem to benefit

I have never done

Not on purpose, but I often set a pipe down to return to it hours/a day later if I get busy with something else.
Ahh yes,

There's something about DGT

I DGT often ... but Tom taught me a thing or two

Sure
My pipes always go out and get re-lit so in this case I do dgt, but only for the time-span of a few minutes to about an hour, nothing more than that.
