Open a cold Natural Light and enjoy. Sometimes less is more and getting back to basics is a sure fire way to stave off these sorts of existential funks."

You should be able to get the motor at your local hardware store or DIY store, the buffing wheels are available all over the place, and so is the wax.

there's one option, but there are countless others. Simply google for "buffing wheel" and you will be overwhelmed with the selection.

There, that should do it.

Thanks....Iwas told to get one with an rpm no more than 1600 .I tried my local hardware stores with no luck. I thought there might be a website with pipe supplies that might offer this inormation. Again Thanks
Well with regards to the RPM, I'm guessing you could get some sort of variator or whatever they're called (not really knowledgeable in the field of manipulating electronic equipment other than computers).
There are a bunch of pipe makers here, so I'm sure they'll chime in soon enough.

Did you know Bjarne Neilson?
Are you referring to the pipe maker, Bjarne Nielsen? I knew of him, and I own a few of his pipes. However, I have never met the chap, but I hear he was a wonderful person.

Yes...made great pipes. I understand he his family has sold out his equipment. Too bad. Good pipes.
about rpm so much as buffer diameter and surface feet per minute. Carnauba wax is best applied at about 2500 but buffed out at around 1800. Trip and compound should be lower at about 1200 or so.
If you don't feel like toosing a lot of bucks for a Baldor you can get a Delta variable Speed 8" grinder for about $135 and get buffer wheels for it.

It is on my list of things to get. While I have motors that I could use with bench mandrels, stepped pullys etc. this option seems so easy for the money.

I like that idea. Can you put a 12 in. wheel on that bad boy do you think Chris ? Also, when I get set up, I want the tapered mandrel attachment so that I can change buffing wheels easily. We used to have them at the jewelry store I worked at, not sure how big of a wheel they can handle though.

on the Delta variable speed grinder. I had one and after about 10 pipes, it got hot enough to fry eggs on. Save your nickles and dimes and get a Baldor. I have a 3/4 hp model and it never gets hot. A 1/3 hp should work well. Use 8" or 10" wheels altho 6" will work too. Keep seperate wheels for each compound, wax and buffing. A rake is almost mandatory to keep the wheels clean and even.
I got mine as a kit from www.tarheelparts.com.
Luck to ya.
