Were You A Coterian? (A Subscriber To "The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris")
In light of Lars excellent poll question I have one myself......
Who here was a member of The Universal Coterie of Pipe Smokers?(received The late great Tom Dunn's irregular quarterly "The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris")
What was your membership number?
If not a member, have you ever seen a copy of the Ephemeris?
Best,
D.J.

Am I the only nut that thinks pipes are for smoking not for reading about? No offense intended Dock ... I just can't fathom why someone would want to spend time reading about pipes when you can be enjoying smoking them while reading a good book instead. Oh well. Its me, I know it. Color me strange I guess.

I think Tom had already passed away by the time I heard about his Emphemeris. Never seen or read it.

but have no idea what it was. Hey, I only learnt what a B&M was a week or so ago. I thought it was like Walmart or something. And I've only just subscribed to P&T magazine anyway.
I subscribed from 1992 and miss it a lot. Probably the best pipe magazine ever, only matched by the Danish magazine STOP which was published 1964-76 and also the result of a single man's efforts, the great P.C. Olrik

But I don't remember my number. He even printed a long letter I wrote him once about pipe smoking in the book The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.
TPSE was a fine publication, just as Mr Dunn was a fine man, and a true friend to the pastime. I wavered on participating, and only received 6 or 7 issues before its demise, with the death of Tom Dunn. Outstanding material for our pastime if you can find back copies.

Rick,
If you regularly attended pipe shows/belonged to a pipe club you would fully understand why publications like the Ephemeris were so great and important. For me it was a way to hear what buddies like Rich Esserman, Sam Barnett,Don Seater and Chuck Rio (that I only get to see once a twice a year) were up to. It was a way to catch up with friends and see and hear about their newest aqusitions. Of course smoking a bowl while doing so was a "must" and greatly furthered the enjoyement of the experience.....

Hey Dock,
Mine was 7131. If you include books 1 & 2, I have the complete run of this fantastic "history book" of our hobby.

Right up to the end. Great man, and a great publication.

I became a member only about a year before Tom's death. He sent me several back issues and I treasure them dearly. I like to read about pipes and tobaccos while smoking a pipe.

free to be a frequent lurker, but you will miss a lot of fun.

Never been a Coterian, I'm a life long Republican myself. But seriously folks, never subscribed to the publication.

...articles online with us and hang out a bit. It's addictive. Who needs friends when you got these guys to hang out with?

Hello All,
As you can see, I'm new here; I came across your site and this thread while researching the Ephemeris and the Coterie. I was Coterie Member #861; joined in the fall of 1970. It provided me great pleasure over the years, and Tom was one of the kindest and most gracious people I ever corresponded with but, unfortunately, never had the pleasure of meeting in person. I'm proud that a few humble works of mine were published in the Ephemeris, and Tom once sent me a book from his personal library when he heard I was looking for a copy. As he was going through his fight, my son also was battling cancer, and Tom's only concern in our later correspondence was my son's condition, not his own. I lost an old friend when he passed, although I never shook his hand.
Not sure this is allowed here, and if not please forgive me, but I have a collection of early issues of the Ephemeris for sale. If anyone is interested please contact me for information.
Looks like a great site, and while I will probably be an infrequent poster, I look forward to "lurking", as they say.
All good...Idlefellow
but you may be sorry! As you can see, I've already duplicated my original post trying to do an edit! If anyone could delete it I'd appreciate it. But thanks again, and I'll try to contribute when I can.

Same reason people spend hours and hours posting their blogs, reviews, and comments about pipe smoking on internet forums and reading them too ;)
