Shining your silver bands
I just bought a pipe today, and I noticed that the silver bands was adly tarnished. At the asking price, and since the B&M guy was so friendly, I bought the pipe anyway, knowing there exists a solution to make that silver shine.
I got home, and got online to find out the best products to use. My findings: toothpaste. Works like a charm!

This really works and its less messy than toothpaste. Just rub some pipe tobacco ash on the silver and watch what happens. You will be surprised.

I'm a dedicated user of Happich "Simichrome" metal polish! I get mine on e-bay from a a fella in Georgia who deals in collectible knives. It shines all metals up like a charm.I used a quarter of a tube on the chrome trim on my old mercedes roadster last night : )

You can get them at your local hardware store. They're non-woven fabric that is impregnated with a cleaning solution. I've been using them for months and they don't damage the finish of the pipe. The do however do a nice job on removing vulcanite oxidation - which is a nice bonus! Only one caveat - you MUST wipe off any of the cleaning agent from your stem before you put it in your mouth or your lips may tingle for a little bit. Just wipe the stem down vigorously with a dry cloth and you'll be good to go. Nothing shines up a silver band better.

Wow, I'll have to try that!
I use a product called Blue Magic. It is non abrasive and removes oxidation very well. It can be had at most auto parts stores and truck stops.
BTW, it will shine aluminum 'til it looks like chrome.
