Form vs. function
What would be the ultimate factor when deciding what to smoke in wich pipe? Almost every pipesmoker has his/her own opinion on wich pipe is suitable for a specific blend or type of tobacco. I'm trying to establish if there is any correlation between different opinions. Is it the size of the bowl, shape of the stem, size or position of the smoke hole, length of the stem, depth of the bowl................This could probably continue forever.
I hope I'm making sense here. I really want to pinpoint certain factors that is important for making the right pipe for the intended purpose and/or customer preferance. It would also be interresting to see if it's actually the pipe design that makes the difference or maybe simply a personal thing.

I cannot remember where I have read it..and in as much it may have been pieces from a hundred different places, but from what I understand...what type of tobacco sings in a particular pipe has little to do with shape. Size may be a different thing...insomuch as a small pipe might be more suited to strong tobaccos...and a large suited to longer more mild smokes...but the chemistry of each block of briar or other wood is as unique as a thumb print...having seen different sun and soil...and myriad other differences...so while draft and such might change the smoke, a properly engineered pipe will choose its own tobacco for which to shine...and not much of the shaping will change that.
the only thing that I can think of that might be different from this would be a long stemmed churchwarden style pipe that might cool the smoke more than others...or the long shanked Canadian which might absorb more moisture than others...but apart from these more major type of differences...I have come to set store by what I wrote above...

I've been trying to establish for some months now by keeping records. The conventional wisdom has not really proved itself at all. Some pipes seem to do better than others with almost anything I put in them. Some expensive pipes are really obnoxious - & vice versa. My mood/ what I've eaten/ phase of the moon/ I dunno/ random factors have a major effect on how I percieve the quality of a smoke. The shape & size seem far less important.
The one thing I have found with me is with biting or hot burning tobacco;s a longer stem seems to calm them down
And aromatics seem to have more taste in a larger pipe
