@#$%^&*=+^%$^&^ Out of action.........again

I'm writing this with only one hand so I hope you can read with only one eye. I sustained a really nasty deep cut right in the middle of the palm of my left hand. I took a bottle of beer from the freezer and as I turned around I tripped over Udo, my WSSD that approached me unnoticed and was standing behind me. This was only the second beer for the evening so I was still 100% sober. The bottle shattered in my hand as it hit the floor and a large glass splinter stuck more than halfway through my hand. I received 5 stitches and right now it's hurting seriously. I'm hoping and praying that there's no permanent damage. I have a strange feeling in my fingers except the thumb and little one. A really sore and numb feeling.

This is a major setback for me after cutting my finger on the bandsaw a few months ago. With Christmas coming and more than 30 orders for knives and 15 orders for pipes before then I think I'm a bit screwed.

Maybe i should just place an ad in the newspaper:
KNIFEMAKER AND WANNABE PIPEMAKER WORKSHOP FOR SALE
OWNER RETIRING DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES
Buy one get one free!

Or maybe it would be worth it getting my hands insured .

hand insurance...

just don't go with AIG...on a more serious note...sorry to hear about your hand. I always wonder about insuring your hands though...being in design, my hands are my livelihood as well...if I got in a car accident and couldn't draw...I wonder what the heck I would do...

anyway...hope it heals up well and soon...

Cheers,

Josh

Yeah you gotta be careful

Yeah you gotta be careful with those bandsaws and beer bottles LOL. I have been cutting meat for 12 years and I have had some close calls on a bandsaw. I almost cut my finger off a few years back. Sometimes you get careless. I use something else to push the meat (wood) through the blade so I don`t compromise my fingers and keep plenty of clearance between my fingers and the blade. Good Luck on those orders.

A change of business is called for

Perhaps the ever dangerous stuffed animal / plush toy industry as long as we can trust you with the needles needed to sew these toys together.

Man, hope you get well soon.

btw, what the hell is a WSSD? (I hate abbreviations)

kevlar gloves

The only way to go when you want a brew. Man Olivier, I hope you are not jinxed or something. Two in just a few months. Anyway, hope you heal well without any nerve/muscle damage.

Get well...

Hope you heal up quick. Personally... when I am doing work on a bandsaw, I use great caution while cutting. The following method is very safe and provides a great deal of protection....

"HONEY, I NEED YOU TO CUT SOMETHING ON THE BANDSAW FOR ME"

Being an insurance agent for 37 years...

...I'll offer you a "hand" policy. Here's how it works:

Your premium is payable in full at inception of the policy in the amount of $50,000. The policy will pay you $49,000 for the loss a hand.

Loss of a hand is defined as completely severed from your arm.

Your premium is payable annually.

HAH...

If AIG worked like that, they wouldn't have gone broke. This could be a new direction for the insurance business.

Thanx

It hurts like hell this morning and the palm turned a nice shade of purple. Can't even hold a box of matches. I guess that's what I deserve for being the village idiot.

Rick, a WSSD is a White Swiss shepherd dog. Very similar to a GSD (German shepherd dog), only white. Udo is 4 months old now and gets in the way some times because he follows me around like a shadow.

Ckr, I think what I need is a bit more than kevlar gloves. A kevlar suit might do the trick (for beer drinking, of course). In the workshop I will need some real protection:-)

Sparks, LOL my wife has a natural fobia for the macines in my workshop. She won't even come close if there's a machine running and that includes the Dremel.

Man, it's weird trying to tipe with 1 hand only!

Oliver

I might also recommend the use of canned beer. The worst you can do with them is spill your beer if you trip over a small furry house pet.

Sorry Olivier, that sounds

Sorry Olivier, that sounds really bad. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and don't get mad at the dog.

Actually a family member of mine holds that title.

My family was in the logging business before it got all non PC to harvest trees. One of my uncles was working on a yarder engine and had a few wrenches laying on the counter weight by the radiator. He had all the guards off so he could work on it and reached up from underneath to ge a wrench and stuck his hand in the radiator fan. Cost him three fingers. He told me he never felt a thing. Just reached up, felt something slap his hand, and thought to himself "well that was stupid".

Ok, I'll live

Canned beer is the way to go from now on. The hand is OK. Allthough I placed myself on light duty I spent the day in the workshop and made a few tampers. I worked mostly with the right hand and let the lefthand rest while the metal-lathe did most of the work.

Simply can't stand hanging around doing nothing.
