Different Look

Different Look

I saw this pipe on the www.lepipe.it site from maker Gerardo Papalia. Check it out here:

http://www.lepipe.it...

All the hard lines on the pipe are outlined in black. There is another pipe by him on the site that is the same way. I cannot say that I have ever seen this done before, and I am not sure how much I like it. It is not ugly and it is definitely different, but subtly so. However, it seems to break the pipe up and take away from the natural flow of the wood.

Any opinions, or have you seen this done before?

Wow

I was checking out that very pipe. He did a beautiful job executing the shape and taking advantage of the grain and that was actually the first thing that caught my eye. It was not that I didn't see the hard lines I just looked through them. After a few shots (I did not visit a pub, I merely advanced the pictures) the hard lines started to bother me and I felt that true transitions of the grain orientation would have more appeal. So in essense, it did not work for me, which does not diminish the man's capabilities. He still throws out one awesome pipe.

Cute at first look but it doesn't last

At first I thought, "wow, that's unique". Then after looking at all the other pics all I could think of is this is what a pipe would look like if some kid took a sharpie to it. Nah. Not for me.

agreed...

this pipe would look better without the dark outline...it is a novel idea though...even if not a very good one...

Cheers,

Josh

Yep

I'm with you, Rick. The uniqueness wears off pretty quickly. It is good to see someone try something different, though.

There is some really nice grain on that pipe.

Even though the line was

Even though the line was probably intentional, I would venture to guess that such a feature could be the result of a flaw in the wood that one wanted to "prettify" .. and one thing just took another :)

[qoute]result of a flaw in the wood[/qoute] Exactly.

There 2 possible 3 pits visible when the pipe bowl is facing to the left side of the frame. There is also on on the next frame - bottom shank/stummel junction. I am also sure it pissed him off to no end.

the same for me, my dear friend.
be or not be a good pipe? this is the question.
the answer is in the price ... (not in the wind ...)

I do not like...

the dark lines. I agree this is a very beautiful pipe. I just wish it didn't have those dark lines on it.
