Hold-me-over pipe
As you may have guessed I am new to these forums, and I am actually hoping to built a pipe of my own here soon. I came here to ask about a pipe brand that sells cheap pipes ($40 range) that are still of decent quality and looks. Just some solid brand names would be great!

try Frenchy (link). Sometimes he has some Sav naturals in the $40 range. Saw a pretty sweet Sav dog for a hair more. Also check out some Stannie estates, might be some in that range.
He will also toss you a free cob, but you also should order a few as they are just plain handy to have on hand.

with both Frenchy's Pipes and with the Sav naturals. They are classic shapes, well-balanced and color well w/ smoking. Few e-tailers as fine and reasonable as Frenchy, either.

Some nice Estates to be had for that price range, just have to do a little 'web work to find 'em, or try eBay.

You might have fun polishing Naturals with 600 and 1500 and staining them as you wish or wait before they will change their color themselves. I don't advice rubbing them all over your face, though (just in case, it's not a joke).
What is good about cobs is that you can have a dozen for some 60 dollars and don't rush building your rotation. I wish I did that and didn't end up with a bunch of questionable estates. Cobs are quite decent smokers they just require quick breaking in and nice rest.

Stanwell pipes from Frenchy's is a great way to go. Frenchy is a fantastic guy and he puts the 'C' in Customer Service. That man goes above and beyond. Well worth your while.

to all of you for these great suggestions...
It's good to have a few people who know something about pipes around!

And, we have Craig Tarler (President of Cornell & Diehl) tobacco manufacturer as a member, as well. www.conellanddiehl.c...
And, we have the infamous Bob Runowski (renowned tobacco blender) of the popular Cornell and Diehl "Runowski/Tarler" Blends produced by C&D. Give some of those a try... it'll put hair on your chest!

You can't go wrong with the any of the above suggestions.
Kaywoodie is also a good choice. GFO has several for $36 dollars with free shipping. I own two from the Gold Series. They are fine smokers.

What do you guys know about Fratelli (Gigi) pipes? I found this one on the site you gave me Captain Bob -

I'm sort of a sucker for Bulldogs, and this one doesn't look half-bad...
Thanks Beckett those Kaywoodies do look nice!

It looks a bit small like a coffee-break pipe. Tough to judge from the pic. Price is good, though. If you call them, they will give you the length and bowl diameter. You may be able to add ten bucks and get into something better.

Beckett, you must be my brother from another mother. I was just getting ready for a thunderous endorsement of Kaywoodies and codger burlies and you beat me to it. Well done! BTW, what do you make of that new fangled PA? I've not been able to locate it locally but will eventually fish for it on the web. Is it as good as the old standby PA?

At first I was suspect because the cocoa/chocolate scent from the bag was very noticeable, but I think it's quite good. I find myself smoking it more and more each day. It shares much of the same taste as PA but has a slightly lighter, more sweet, more nut/chocolate flavor. I am not sure if it will ever replace the regular PA, that's a tall order, but having been smoking it for only a month, it's already a favorite.
Weird though, I haven't seen it sold in the B&Ms in my area, but always the local discount cigarette stores. I know Lilbrown use to sell it online, but they haven't listed it for awhile now.
Some Savinelli's are in that range but you can get a good no-name Italian briar for that price too.
I have a no-name Savinelli billiard that cost me $40.00.
How I knew it was a Sav because there was a Balsa filter in it!
For $40 to $50 bucks, you can get a good decent pipe.
Try a Dr. Grabow too, you may be suprised. They are very good smoking pipes.
