Peterson fans
Hello all,
Got back to my pipe a few months ago and really enjoying it. I went from a basket pipe to a couple of inexpensive Savinelli's and a Stanwell. All were estate pipes for under $30.00 and I've been happy with all. Is there a line of Peterson's that you can find for under $40.00, used, that is worth trying?

Several. Aran's for example will trade on ebay for <$40. But why not look at the Shamrock range - $51 at www.pipesandcigars.c.... They also have a Shannon at $51.
advice. There were quite a few I found to my liking.

You should be able to find Irish Seconds new for less than $40. If I have been informed correctly, they are Peterson's seconds line.
is not the crone who lives down the street and talks with her cats. The Auld Erin line, like the Irish Seconds, seem to be seconds of Petersons, and quite fine smokers. I've been converting an Auld Erin shape 106 to ERRd, and I compared it with the Peterson classic shape chart. They seem to be one and the same.

I will second the Aran line. Great smokers at a more than decent price. I have one that has been exceptionally good to me for about 4 years now.

According to http://www.pipes.org... here are a few more names Peterson sells pipes under (2nds obviously)
Irish Seconds, Shamrock, Erica (system), Captain Pete's, Kinsell
I wonder if "Kinsell" is a misspelling of "Kinsale" ... I have a Peterson Kinsale and its marked "Peterson" clearly. Its a Sherlock Holmes series reject because of a big pit (filled of course). It smokes incredibly well. One of my best. Don't know that it fits in that under $50 range when new though ... IIRC, mine cost $80 but on ebay you'd find one for well under that $50 range for sure.

The Arans are nice. The quality is as high as any other Peterson but with a matte finish, which I actually prefer.
I have a Shamrock and, while cheap, it has some quality issues compared to my other Petes. Bad bore, won't pass a cleaner, and bad stem fit. As a result, this pipe does not get smoked much. It is cool to watch the finish darken with every bowl, though.
