Stanwell Venturi
Does anyone know anything about the Stanwell Venturi line of pipes? Here is one at cupojoes.com:
Is it just a different style from Stanwell, or is there something weird about it (e.g., a system pipe, filter pipe, etc.)?
Thanks in advance.

I checked it out. While not familiar with it, I can say I am pleased with the two Stan's I have in the same price range. Their stems are excellent feel, fit and endurance. I have a Pete with a similar stem and I like it.

Yes, the majority of my collection is Stanwell and I love them all. Much better than my Petes. However, before I snag a Venturi, I want to make sure that it is a plain ol' pipe and that there are no weird gimmicky things about it. I have not seen these very often.

I did not see the Venturi in the current non-filtered pipes online catalog at this location: http://www.stanwell....
I also did not see it in the filtered catalog either?

I know. I have researched them quite a bit and have found no information. Tricky, tricky Stanwell.

here's what I found...it looks like it is pretty normal...just with some extra metal adornments...

Excellent. The picture of it disassembled shows me exactly what I need to know. I check out the BP site regularly (earlier today, as a matter of fact), but I have never seen that photo.
Thanks, and cheers.
EDIT: Wow, they have a lot of Venturis on there. I usually only check out the high-end stuff on that site. Sweet.

I like that site too...just wish there weren't the ungodly high shipping price...barring that...I might have another PAD feeding site...
but I must say I am with you on the whole stanwell thing...I think that the more I try...and with several dozen brands including a bunch of high grades and hand mades represented in my collection....it is surprising how well the inexpensive Stanwells stack up...and frankly they have one of the most talented pipe designers behind them, which means that most of their pipes are spot on for shaping...
and though I am not one for saddle bits, that is a fine looking pipe...
Cheers,
Josh
I love saddle bits, so anything along those lines catches my eye.
Not sure if you noticed, but you can get registered airmail for just under $20 up to about 17.5 ounces. Not cheap, but better that the $50 courier service that pops up at the top of their shipping options list.

that's a lot better...still spendy...so it will take quite a pipe to make it worthwhile, but still...a lot better...thanks!

Josh
I went ahead and snagged a Venturi from cupojoes.com. A smooth finish #03. I threw in a sandblast featherweight poker for good measure. I love my 243 featherweight (it is hanging from my mouth as I type this) and thought it needed a companion.

That venturi you showed earlier was very nice but if memory serves its not the one you purchased ... got a link to cupojoes showing one similar to the venturi you bought? The featherweight too?

Actually, I got the one that I linked to above. As for the poker:

I thought that venturi was just 'an example' of a venturi, not the one you were considering. I like it (not that that matters)! The featherweight is cool looking but its so tiny! I wish I could smoke smaller pipes but I just can't take the chance of getting smoke in my eyes ... I was scared about that recent dunnie, but that featherweight is even smaller! I don't think it would work for me ... but hey, its your pipe and a nice looking one at that as I already said. May you smoke them in good health for many years!

Well, it was meant as an example when I first posted it. It just happened to turn into the one that I ordered, too. Who knew?
I was initially worried about the size of the featherweights as well, so I understand your concerns. However, I am extremely happy with my 243 featherweight so I did not hesitate to snag this one. They come in nicer finishes, but I consider these to be strictly utilitarian pipes so I went with the cheapest and most rugged finish.
And featherweight is right. My 243 weighs in at 0.8 ounces (about 22.7 grams).

When I remember that Ser Jacopo I had custom made for myself ... they must have used the heaviest chunk of wood they could find ... darn thing came in at over 3.5 oz ... nearly broke my jaw trying to clench that pipe. Needless to say that baby went the way of ebay. I noted on the auction that this pipe was a holder and not a clencher. Sure hope the winner paid attention.
At the weight of that 243 how can you even feel it in your mouth? Wow. Must be nice.

on pulling off a two-fer. Can't have enough pipes, but hang onto that featherweight on windy days.
Fume in pace, ckr
Yes, the 0.8 is great. I really don't notice any weight at all, even when it is loaded. I have turned into quite a clencher, so I really have to fall in love with a pipe to buy it if it weighs over the standard 1.44 ounces.
Wow, 3.5 ounces. I am sure it was easy to pack since the pipe's gravitational field pulled the tobacco right into the bowl.

ROTFLMAO ... that it did ... thanks, I needed that.

I'm a firm believer in Stanwell pipes! In my mind THEY ARE THE BEST VALUE IN THE PIPE MARKET TODAY PERIOD! I've become very interested in their Sixten,Chowitsch and Ann Julie designed pipes and have been hunting for these for the last month or so. I now have about 5 Stans and would like to add another 10 to my yard/fishing pipe rotation. Their price point just can't be beat! You can buy a Majestic or a Colonial for about $80.00!
Best,

I wholeheartedly endorse this statement. And then some.
Stanwells are, by far, the best quality pipes -- considering their price tags. It's not without reason that this brand is best represented in my collection. Most of my Stanwells also smoke as well as many of my high grades. That should tell you something.
And the fun part is, they're not expensive, so you can find out for yourself (comparing them with high grades will be slightly more expensive as you'd stil need to buy a high grade pipe as well, but that's part of the -- well, my -- fun).
Cheers!

Not sure if you are looking for new or estate, but cupojoes.com has some of the designer pipes (including a Sixten and lots of Eltangs). Bisgaard has quite a few as well, though they are all S. Bang.
