The all new super import duties mega thread!
After going through some ridiculous and totally unnecessary time wastage simply trying to buy some pipe tobacco, I decided it might be helpful to get the facts out so pipe smokers in our respective lands have the facts on tobacco import duties. I was advised by dopey and ignorant customs clerks that we would have to pay between 200-300% of the purchase price of the tobacco. This was totally incorrect advice and as a result my tobacco is now back on a plane heading in the wrong direction. If I would have had the facts up front I could have forced the issue with customs and paid the correct fee instead of going through the ridiculous beaurocracy that typifies all dealings with governments everywhere.
I hereby set forth the facts (sortof) on import duties on pipe tobacco in Israel. I respectfully request of our esteemed membership to do the same for their respective countries. I'm posting a copy of the line from the Israeli Department of Customs and VAT first in Hebrew (with associated link) and then in English. Dear Reader, please note that as with all information the government hands out, this is subject to change without prior notice and nobody even guarantees what they printed is correct even at the time of printing (August 18th, 2008). Of course you and I are responsible for everything, but somehow governments are accountable and responsible to nobody. Now, on with the show:

Let's take the example of 1 pound of C&D bulk retailing at 30 USD:
15.5% of 30 USD = 4.65 USD
58.11 NIS @ 2.2 lb/kg = 26.41 NIS / lb. = 7.34 USD @ current exchange rates
base tobacco retail = 30.00 USD

Grand total 1 lb. C&D bulk = 41.99 /lb.
Now even though this is about 12 bucks more than the Americans pay, it is about 40% more than the base price, not the 200 or 300% we were threatened (er, advised) with. While I will not line anybody's pockets by paying 60 or 80 dollars a pound for even C&D's excellent bulks, I will grudgingly cough up $41.99 if forced to.
Fellow smokers, know your import duties!

There are some customs fees that I am unsure of, but to import tobacco to sweden, there will be a tax of approx $250 per kilo of smoking tobacco.
In other words, no matter how much it costs abroad, there will be at LEAST this additional cost in tax money.

Stieltje that is really unbelievable! How much is a 50g tin in Sweden? Are there any Sweidish pipe smokers?

we do exist, but I think alot of us buy our tobacco from abroad, but within the EU, ie, no import tax..

which is enough to pay for a pound of C&D bulk. Add the base price of the tobacco and you're now paying 200 percent.
But if you can get everything from inside the EU the tax issue is really moot I guess. False alarm!
Are there any dealers with good prices in the EU? Or do you have to pay English prices?
It's reall hard to understand how the Americans pay less for Sam Gawith and Gawith & Hoggarth than the people who live right down the street do...until you realize the taxes are what drives prices so high everywhere (except in America).

it is so small that it is under the radar so to speak. Cigarettes are another story and this is where all the tax revenue is coming from. In RI there is a $6.25 price on a pack, 39 cents is federal tax and 2.87 is State tax. That is about 50% of the cost going to tax revenue. However, there is still more taxes in that price due to the Multi-state tobacco settlement which is $246 billion over the first 25 years. I am not exactly sure but I think that soon after the settlement a carton of butts went from about $32 up to $56. So my guess it that about another $2 is in there. So a $1.07 pack of butt goes for $6.25.
The reason the federal tax is so low is also because of the tobacco settlement, if they raise the tax the settlement is reduced in kind.

The federal tax on Pipe tobacco has not gone up since 2002, state tax is another story which is not priced in to US internet sales. All in all cigarette smokers are our friends.

1 gram of tobacco costs 4 SEK, that is, in total, not the tax.
the tobacco prices in the EU is higher than in the US. but since I order from switzerland, I get away a bit cheaper than if I where to buy from for example germany.
tobacco prices in Italy is plain silly, as I think Mr Ramon can testify of.
In Spain there is a tobacco monopoly, that means, no etailers, and very few blends to choose from.
in the UK prices are about half of what they are in sweden, and Denmark have prices about 1/4 of those in sweden as well.
At any rate, the bloody bastards that rules the EU wants to "harmonize" the tobacco prices everywhere, to keep us from ordering from another country. in other words, increasing prices everywhere in europe.
