Animal lovers ?

Animal lovers ?

I realise that this might be seen as an "off-topic" discussion but please bear with me on this one. Pipe smokers are generally seen as good, honest and down to earth people with good character and the same is true to animal lovers and specifically dog lovers. I believe that a person's character could even be judged by the type of dog/cat/animal he owns. Dogs are truely man's best friend. I've been involved in dog breeding and training for the best part of the past 20 years of my life and especially GSD's, wich in my opinion is one of the best breeds ever. I currently own (or maybe I'm being owned by) a total of 7 dogs wich includes a Siberian Husky, a Great Dane, 4 Dachshunds and the latest addition to the family a WSSD. The WSSD is simply a white version of a GSD and matches the intellegence, vigour and abilities of a good GSD. I know it is not always possible for everybody to own pets, but it would be interresting to see what pets everybody owns.

In addition to the above mentioned dogs I also have 3 cats, a Parrot a Californian corn snake and a large selection of mice (not really pets but a source of food for the snake). And then there's also 16 horses (if they could be seen as pets).

Dogs

We have always had dogs, it seems. Rather, dogs have always adopted our family. After all, someone has to drive their car, so they can go for rides to the park. The dogs have treated us well. I had a border collie for years, and he helped me through undergraduate and graduate school. Out Wheaten terrier did a great job in raising my sons and tending me through a long illness; he passed in 2005. Our current companion is the demon Peke who likes to smoke pipes and cigars on the porch, and never missed a radiation session with my wife.

They are wonderful friends.

Six cats...

wander my house. Both my wife and I grew up with cats as pets so it's no surprize. Felines may not be quite the companions dogs are, but I like their low maintenance and the fact they each have a different personality.

I agree with dogs being awesome companions.

I've always had dogs around. My first dog was a retriever/german sheperd mix. She was an awesome dog. I remember getting her a week before Kindergarden started and she lived until about 3 weeks after I graduated high school.

We had a Siberian Husky. His fur was red(or copper) and white. He was a great dog. He was overly friendly, which made people who didn't like huskies(the whole looking like a wolf thing) nervous. We had to move to the city, so we gave him to a neighbor with a 20 acre farm. I remember him impregnating a German Sheperd and the puppies angrily dropped off at our door by an irrate neighbor.

I now own a German Sheperd. She is the most loyal and protective dog I've owned. She just turned 12. Absolutely hates the smell of Walnut and has a passion for butter if you're careless enough to leave it around. Like other older sheperds, she's starting to have hip trouble, but the vet says she's still going strong.

Critters are good people!

10 year old Brittany Spaniel lives here! Isn't she a cutie?!!

Always had a farm of sorts

I've grown up with just about every rodent known to man, dogs, cats, birds, and a few reptiles.

I had a shepherd/miniature collie growing up. She passed when I was 13. After her, my parents got a miniature long-haired Dachshund. He's still alive at 13 years.

I currently have three shepherd mixes. Abbie, the oldest is a mix with either a lab, or a rott. She thinks she's a human. Cali is mixed with collie and tries to fool you into thinking she's the dumbest dog around, and the youngest, Nola is mixed with great dane. She's what we call a B.A.T. dog (Big Ass Twit) Yeah, complete spaz.

We also have two cats. One who chose us as his caretakers when my wife and I got married 9 years ago. The other is a Siamese and has to be the craziest cat I've ever known.

What is a bootleg bon vivant, you may ask? Well, it’s kinda like a monkey stealing a soldier’s last MRE. Not saying an MRE is all that great or anything, but it’s prime rib to a monkey who is stuck with nuts, berries, and bananas all the damn time. ~ BBVV

Had Dogs and Cats Most of My Life

My Mom was a big time animal person and seemed to take it upon herself to adopt any homeless critter she encountered. My Dad would invariably tell her that "If she brought one more GD dog into the house that he was moving out." She'd tell him that the subject dog or cat would only stay for a week or two and then she'd take it to the pound. At the end of two weeks or so she would tell him that she was taking subject dog or cat to the pound and he would invariably say, "Your not taking that dog/cat anywhere."

For my wife and I our life style and living arrangements have not always been conducive to dogs but we do have two cats that have graciously decided to share their house with my wife, my son and I. While most cats are rather aloof and don't want much to do with you until they are hungry, my cats have personality and like to be around people. The tom cat will even occassionally step into the shower with you.

The cats outnumber the dogs (make that dog) here.

Four cats one dog. My daughter has a couple of kittens (Asia ans Midna) someone very thoughtfully left on our front porch in a shoe box. My wife has two cats (Carson and Sasha) and a Terrier of questionable background (Bunny) she got from the Humane Society. We have had the dog for close to three years and she is still a bit skittish. She had been abused, which is something I will never be able to understand.

but someone abusing a pet is the fastest way to piss me off and put my fat carcass in action to put a serious hurting on the abusive a$$hole. I've got absolutely NO patience with people that hurt critters.

I know what you mean about the dog being skittish. My dog pictured above has this thing with feet ... if you tap her with your foot when she is sleeping she instantly growls and spins around toward you defensively (not offensively, strictly to defend herself). She never follows through with biting or anything. Its fairly obvious that sometime in this dog's past someone kicked her. Of course the rescue orgs don't tell you those things when you go to adopt the dog ... ah well. She's part of the family now and I have no intention of letting her go ... but we will get past thing with feet someday (lots of patience on my part) I hope.

My wife and I love animals

We have two dogs, a basset and a blue heeler mixed breed. We also have a black cat and we joke that the critters own us. I can't imagine a life without our four-legged friends. They give so much love and ask for so little in return.

Smokey

I would want a cat

right now is not the right time though..

grew up with cats, and learned to like the little critters.

Dogs on the other hand. Dogs bite, and I don't trust them. I never extend any limbs in their general direction nowadays...

we have a cat

She is 16 years old and moved around a lot (Moscow - Paris - Moscow - Paris - New York - Chicago - Orlando). Very chatty and social when there are no guests in the house.

One day we will also have a dog.

Around here there's one cat.

Around here there's one cat. Her name is Samara. She just lost her kitten teeth, so she's around 6-7 months old now. My wife and I both want to get a dog as well, but we're saving that for whenever we decide to get a house. I have my mind set on a Rottweiler. Although we could get a Rott pup, I wouldn't want to confine him or her to a small apartment when we're away at work and there's only a few areas in town where he/she would be able to run around without a leash. Hopefully our finances will allow us to get a house within the next couple of years :)

Two cats

We have two cats: Veruca and Chloe.

I had dogs growing up, but I am partial to cats. I would like to have a dog again in the future, but they are too high maintenance for all the traveling and other stuff that we do right now.

Mine

is a Shar Pie. She is quite old now at 15 years. She spent 10 of those years with me on the truck. She has over a million miles behind her. I'm afraid it will be akin to losing a son or daughter when that time comes.

Wow, no wonder

I like you guys. I firmly believe that you never trust anyone who does not like animals. Or that animals don't like. I'm down to just one dog at the moment, a Jack Russell, the love of my life (as the wife knows). Can't be happy without a dog around. Really need a Spaniel. And a Great Dane - my last one died a few years back. Great dog. Thick as a brick but with a heart of gold. Wanders off mumbling & scheming....
