Second Time Round

Second Time Round

I've been in a bit of a pipe slump as of late, meaning all but one of my pipes was extremely rested. Usually I quite enjoy a rested pipe, in terms of 6 or 7 days. However when I went for a smoke, I grabed one of them that I had left sitting for 2 months and I found it quite horrible. Not being totaly put off I waited some 30 minutes after I finished, gave the pipe a quick clean, and it was one of those absolutely wonderful bowls. I've smoked a nearly 25gs of petersons irish oak in it today.

So what's with this? Can you rest a pipe to much?

You will find, that I on several occasions have spoken about just sticking to smoking the same pipe all day every day. The flavor difference is "all that". Give it a go, and you too will become a believer.

I broke my rotation and messed up my pipes

A few months ago I bought a bunch of pipes. I walked away from my primary rotation to work on only these new pipes. When I was just about satisfied that they were broken in correctly I did another stupid thing: I went out and bought another. So more time away from the primary rotation. Then ckr gave me the Bullfrog pipe. Yet again more time away from my primary rotation. Prior to walking away from these pipes NONE of them gurgled at all unless the tobacco was overly wet. Now that I'm back into them (all other pipes are broken in sufficiently) they all gurgle slightly. I can only attribute this to giving them way too much rest.

btw, I've smoked a few of them more than usual to see if the gurgling goes away and sure enough it does so its all good. I guess for the next month or so I'll be going through a few extra pipe cleaners.

As far as taste goes - no change. But they do seem to smoke hotter FWIW. Both hotter to the touch as well as a hotter / steamier smoke coming into my mouth. Go figure.

I have committed

a pipe to the "Lars Torture", a full bent dedicated to a single tin till it is gone. Sometimes I do it twice a day and some days it does get skipped. That is not because I wouldn't smoke it all day, it is because I am a slut and can't stay with a single blend day in and day out. However, that pipe is "ghosting" itself with each smoke.

Interesting

Another interesting thread concerning pipe resting. As a natural skeptic and someone who doesn't believe crap unless I see it, I love to see experiences where traditional methods and practices (such as resting a pipe) are turned on their ear. I have yet to complete a full Lars Torture test, but I want to soon.

I used to be a skeptic, but

I used to be a skeptic, but after having said to myself: "oh what the heck" - I gave it a go and never looked back. It does help a lot when you're a "one blend" smoker as the flavor development is that much more obvious.

On the subject of pipe resting...

To me, what really seems to matter is to use a pipe cleaner after every smoke. But, I usually rotate pipes and may smoke the same pipe, the same day, but in rotation. I find that a clean and dry pipe that is allowed to cool sufficiently, provides the best smoke for me.

Been there done that

Tried that chain smoking thing a few times (the last time yesterday after reading this thread). Didn't work for me. Moreover, when I go somewhere for a few weeks with a limited number of pipes, so that the rest time is, say, two days by the end of the 4th-5th round deterioration is noticeable.

Even more, most pipes in my rotation are smoked about once a week. One pipe, old Charatan, however, wants more. It's one of the best smokers but if it did not have really good rest it will smoke wet and tasteless.

I guees it depends on the tobacco, pipes and personal preferences.
