The French know a good thing when they see it. LOL

Thanks Muddler

It did a decent job.

Words like insane, idiot, crazy and honey.

My best guess is they are not crazy about the pipe, it is an insane idiot but they think I am a honey. Must be a women's pipe smoking group.

The comments to the photograph

Simple, quick, efficient (essentially) was used in a rather mocking manner. The consensus of opinions was that the individual in the photos was probably insane, and that is not a good method to develop a patina on the pipe. The tone of the comments was more incredulity than any thing else.

Isn't that guy an MPC Member?

Thought I've seen a link to his pics before tonight from the past month or two? Or, am I going crazy?

Wow!

The guy must be a nutburger! Exhibit A: Why would you treat a pipe like that? Come on, you're lighting a pipe not welding for God sake. Exhibit B: Anyone with such prodigious chin whiskers who was not insane would indeed be quite leary of a blow torch that close to his face.

Actually...

I have heard that blow torching a pipe is an effective way of mimicking a sandblast. Milt Kalnitz, father of my local shop owner told me he used to do this to pieces with flaws.

I understand the process is to rough shape the pipe, leave a bit of extra meat on it and then blow torch it, effectively removing the softer wood and leaving the harder wood. The next step is a wire wheel to remove the charred bits and then Voila! You have something similar to a sandblast. I think I might try it.

That explains a lot...

Helps me appreciate his insanity, but I really like the guy. He's got more tins than Carter's has liver pills! And, i really like his pipe lighter! :)

Testify!

Yes, the lunatic in the pics is in fact our own beloved tobacco slut: ckr. Hey Chris, Sparks could be onto something .... if you blow torch the briar and then sand blast off *some* of the char you might be onto a new finish! LOL. But seriously too.

At the very least it's worth a try on a scrap block. And report back with the pics here, obviously.

Enfin, afin de repondre au question qu'on a posé au début de ce fil ci, je dois dire qu'il faut apprendre la langue si vous voulez savoir ce qu'on est en train de dire dans ce lien là.

Cheers!

ckr,

... no way you're bringing that damn blow torch on the plane with you to the islands! We'd blow the plane to smitherines before we even got off the ground! I will allow smoking on the flight but now I have to institute rules regarding ignition devices?

If I

am not mistaken, fellow seldom heard from MPC'er Thomas Martin has done a couple of pipes that were charred and subsequently wire wheeled. I know he e-mailed me some shots but I can't remember if they were also posted here on a thread where he discribed the process.

Now as for the stone throwing. Be truthful, aren't all of us here just a wee bit inflicted?

I think I ...

Will give it a go on my next pipe. I have some shitty blocks, so what can it hurt. And yes Chris, it was Tom Martin who did it, blow torched, and then wire wheel them, gives the similar effect of the sandblast. I figure it is worth a shot and see how it works out.

Ill keep you all posted.

Gosh ;-)

I had a totally different perception of what ckr looks (and would act)like. I was amazed to see that he is just your average-friendly-grandpa-nextdoor kinda guy.

Hey Chris, that pipe seems to be smoking a bit on the hot side. What did it taste like?

Rick...

Did you make that avatar... or is that one of the Simpson characters? I'd be curious to see what mine would turn out like if there was a avatar building site.
