Tuesday's Smoke Thread - July 15, 08

Some C&D Virginia Gentleman in a Dublin Dog. Quite an enjoyable smoke, especially after last nights downfall. This tin has definately captured my interest and is deserving of a full investigation. It is a mild starter and very quickly developes some complexity that tickles my taste buds. It does seem like a little drying would improve its smoking qualities which is a good thing, much better than being too dry.

Something new

I have Riverboat Gambler in a CLEAN Savinelli right now. It really is very good. Bob R. has a way of adding Perique to things that just brings out the magic. The Turkish is there, in its glorious richness. This is a very, very fine Backy. Cap'n Bob, I don't think you'll be disappointed. This has such a rich, mellow, creaminess to it that I had to check the label to make sure it doesn't contain cigar leaf. My Oh my, it is becoming a fine day. The weather is glorious, I'm working at home, largely unbugged & a P&C TAD arrived earlier with the RBG & other treasures. This smoke gets better the further down the bowl it goes....

Enjoy your day.

The last of my OJK...

until reinforcements arrive. I'm down to SWR, ERR, Troost, and a little MacBaren VA#1.
Smoking a Savinelli Porto Cervo pot today, one of my best burley burners.

The Monsoon Has Arrived

It's pouring rain this morning. I just as soon stay in bed with the fetching Mrs. GI or sit around and smoke pipes and drink Cuban coffee but hey, I've really got to go work for my pimp (the Infernal Revenue Service) so suppose I best get my hind parts in gear. Will be toting my Chrishill, a Doodler, some Epiphany and some Big n. Burley. Have a good day guys (and you too watchmaker)

Fine, clear day

winds from the WNW, the humidity has dropped considerably, and the lunch hour smoking lamp has been ignited. I came in from enjoying a bowl of PA/Sugar barrel, because I forgot Pouch #1 and #2, and there was only Pouch #3 in the briefcase. So, PA/mix which isn't all that unreasonable in taste and burn. The pipe du jour is a Linkman billiard, also in the briefcase.

Thanks, Muddler! I needed to hear that... My RG should arrive Thursday or Friday and I'll post my smoke. I got a pound of it coming.

Turkish is magical stuff if used properly in conjunction with other leaf and condimentals. Most of the time unflavored black cavendish (greatly misunderstood) will provide the "creaminess" to tobacco blends if used properly.

Normally I don't like the oppressive humidity and high tempertures that Summer brings. But after having a rather brutal winter, where it seemed to snow 14 inches each week, I am really enjoying days of 80 degree tempertures. Today has been a lazy day of nothing but Half&Half and a Prince Albert/Carter Hall mix.

Smoking a bowl

of Walnut, courtesy of Matches. Had some doubts as this blend seems to have everything in it but the kitchen sink, but it is a decent smoke. Seems pretty burley to me, fairly light and not heavily over to the balkan side of things. Maybe a half way or transition blend between the two camps. Should be hitting some more C&D VG a bit later.

Simple

Keeping it simple with some OJK in a Peterson army billiard. This is probably the only Peterson I have left which I enjoy smoking. Sad, really. Anyway, just started reading "Wicked" and will probably continue throughout the evening. Except, of course, for the obligatory "Simpsons" breaks.

Oh, yes. The typical "dry as a bone" and "hot as hell" here today.

After dinner smoke...

that includes ERR in my new Ckr pipe. The pipe is charring nicely, smokes dry, and is a handsome addition amongst all my junk here.

it's OGS today, first at lunch with my Pete while I watched the ships sail by, now tonight in my Dunhill. Happy Tuesday!

Evening Smoke

Yup, I'm truly back on track (ungunked pipes and all) 5 bowls total today with Epiphany and Big n Burley running the show. Will probably end up with PA in my Chrishill pretty soon. If you haven't already been indoctrinated, try Epiphany, this stuff is the dogs bullocks too, a great all day smoke. B&B is also very good, something quite similar to OJK not as spicey though but it definitely has that border line harsh, kick the door in quality to it. Great day of piping my friends, enjoy.

I should be in the shop by now

however C&D Virginia Gentleman has once again graced the bowl of one of my dogs, yes I have 2 now - watchout Lars I'm a gaining. Luckily tonight's pipe did not run into a catastrophic failure mid smoke, took no cleaners and delivered satisfaction down to the very bottom of the bowl.

This stuff is a pretty decent smoke. Ya step up, strike the mallet to the pallet and the thumper leaves the bumper but it just falls short of ringing the bell. Deep inside I know this stuff can do it I just got to work with it a bit. It really is quite sophiscated for a mild smoke and while happily puffing away answering e-mails I really wasn't paying that much attention to it. Possible it is just a new and therefore novel taste, regardless I can see this tin going pretty quickly.

Evening Smoke after 1.5 Days off

Didn't feel like smoking at all yesterday and only one bowl the morning before. I think that the heat is starting to get to me.

Sat down in the A/C tonight and am smoking Walnut in a no name straight billard. This pipe has always burned hot, but I like the finish. C'est la vie.

I noticed, at least in this pipe, the Walnut is a bit peppery. The flavor is still subtle, but there is something there that pinches (I wouldn't call it bite). Anyone else notice this with this blend?
