Hello to the rest of the world when they decide to wake up.

Had a bit of luck this morning at work, and now I have the entire afternoon off, which will be spent by leisurely smoking Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe in a variety of pipes, starting with this one now: a Tom Eltang cutty. Great blend -- after all, Orlik made this one -- a great pipe and a weekend ahead that's slightly longer than usual.

I'm one happy camper.

I hope everybody else is doing fine as well.

Ah

I guess this is the Friday smokes thread for those who understand a bit of Afrikaans and the other one if for the "non understanders". Guess I should stick to English to prevent double posting.

I

I find it very easy to understand Afrikaans, Olivier. I have no idea at all why others would have problems with it.

I wish I knew how to speak/write it properly, I have a reflex to dot all my i's and j's so my vrydag looks like vrijdag, en there are a couple more tough things to consider. But I very well understand it.

And if I can understand it, then everybody can.

Zo'n groot licht ben ik niet, you know. I'm not very bright, weet je.

I meet a lot of people from Holland / Nederland and even Belgium. I easily understand the language but find that in most (allmost all) cases they can't understand a word of Afrikaans. I really find it strange because these languages are actually very close to each other in both spoken and written form. I even understand German although I sometimes find it difficult when people start speaking real fast. (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but you seem bright enough).

Olivier

I think for the better part it comes down to pace. I know I will get problems with Afrikaans when it's spoken very quickly, but then that also goes for quite a few Dutch or even Flemish dialects.

German and Dutch are related, but they're farther apart than Dutch and Afrikaans. Last week I had a colleague over who has worked for 15 years (or so) in Zuid-Afrika who mentioned that Flemish (general Dutch regiolect as spoken in the north of belgium and my mother tongue) is probably as close to Afrikaans as it gets. That could very well be true.

This is rather fun, I assume that if you can decipher Dutch and German, you are probably also able to get some sense out of written Swedish, perhaps even Danish. I know I get more out of those two than most would think -- Lars is not most, he has an inkling.

This topic has surfaced once before. Perhaps it could be fun to check it out here:

Zolang de messen die je verkoopt scherp zijn, maakt het niet uit dat je zelf wat bot bent.

(As long as the knives you sell are sharp, it doesn't matter that you're a bit blunt yourself).

I think that's about as close as two different languages can be. Waarom hou julle nie van Dana winner ? Ek dink sy sing fantasties.

That's what I keep saying
corneel wrote:

I keep telling that to my undergraduate students. It's particularly fun to write out the full set of Maxwell's equations in differential form when teaching "Physics for Poets". I've never _quite_ had a student wet themself, but I'm sure it's been close! I'll write out the set of equations (which takes a full blackboard) and then turn around and say "see?" Why they're so confused by a simple set of vector partial differntial equations is beyond me!

Waar ging dit nu ook alweer over?

Eerily close, isn't it?

I find it fascinating; but I do need to stress that, naar mijn bescheiden mening, Afrikaans sounds a lot "funkier." Or perhaps that's merely because it has a more exotic ring to it, for my Western-European ears.

Are you serious? Granted, die frietverkoopster has a pleasant singing voice, and she can keep tone as well. I can't imagine suffering through an entire CD of that ultra-sweet drivel, though.

No, I tend to prefer things like this Dutchman-living-in-belgium-who's-also-often-in-South-Africa ... OK, so that was hardly the best version of that song -- truth be told, it's awful --, but you will know why I chose that fragment. Here's another one, guess why I'm adding that as well.

After Quite a Heavy Smoking Day Yesterday

I slowed it down a bit today. 1 bowl of private stock and 1 bowl of OJK in a 4 digit pot. Will probably hit up BnB or another couple bowls of Mr. Krantz this evening.

Took my bulldog

for a walk loaded with some London Blend 250. A rather smooth smoke that happens to be a 10 year old english, the latakia is hardly eve noticable. But that tin I gave Rick is Yak!.

Gonna try...

Even though I fried my tongue today testing blends at the shop, I'm craving some Walnut. So, I'm gonna give it a go.

To all my Codgers out there, does anyone know if Milantobacco.com is the only place to order Walnut from? I have been unable to find it on any other website. Believe it or not, the 15lb. sample that GI sent me is almost gone, and I'm afraid to run out. LOL

Im exagerating a bit...

But I gotta tell ya, when GI sent me a sample of it, it was in one of those gallon size ziplocks.... If I had to guess... it was a good 8oz.... maybe more. I'm used to an oz. as a sample... not that I am complaining. Generous to say the least.

Vreemd.

----------------------------------------------------------

You're right. That is definitely not bad. I have some suspicion that I could dig up a few more tidbits which would not be out of place here either.

For some reason or other that's all Dutch pop-rock from the eighties. Odd.
