Law banning smoking in cars with minors goes into effect Jan. 1
Californians with New Year's resolutions to quit smoking will have an additional impetus this year: a new law prohibiting smoking in cars with minors goes into effect Jan. 1.
The new law would allow fines of up to $100 for anyone smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes inside a motor vehicle when anyone younger than 18 is present.

It sounds as if the voters and subjects of California owe another huge debt of gratitude to their lawmakers.

The state seems to be the breeding ground of crackpots and fruitcakes. Oh Hell, the entire world is on the social engineering fritz bring on a killer asteroid and give an intelligent species a change.

My fear is Califorinia has alwasy been a trendy place and once things catch on there, they creep eastward...I don't smoke with my daughter in the car because I personally made that decision. I don't need laws to make such decisions for me.

Do we have anybody from California on MPC? If so, what's your take on this whole thing?

So, if I'm a crackhead and me and my kids live under a bridge I can illicit the sympathy of some government entitlement program and the ACLU will see to it that my rights as a parent are defended despite the fact that I'm a dyfunctional drug addicted sociopath, screwing up my own children and forcing them to eat out of dumpsters behind McDonalds because of my drug addiction (it's not my fault you know, it was my dad, exposure to that damn Lynrd Skynrd music and the dreaded Old Dog Walkme or...or...fill in the stupid f$%kin excuse).
If on the other hand I'm an honest hardworking citizen gamefully employed since before my first curley hair, and I decide to light a pipe in the truck on my way home from my son's football practice, well then we got a problem. What the french, toast!? Cheese and rice, only in California. As if we aren't already a bunch of over regulated pantywastes.

I wonder how extreme it will get before the smoking bans borderline complete prohibition. All the optimism in the world won't keep me from thinking that it will come to that. Somewhere, someone will push the big button, just for the principle of the matter.
How far will the smoking community allow themselves to be pushed?

I'm a firm believer this is at the root of the problem. Many Americans are spineless today. They allow themselves to be forced to think what the media and big business tells them.
Every time a new power bar or energy drink comes out, you see people run in droves to the market to obtain said product, until at such time the company manufacturing it tells you it isn't good for you.... But wait.... we have a new product to replace it. This country has become full of followers, and the leaders of days gone by are dwindling.
I honestly think all the tofu and green tea have gone to everyones head.
