Time to develop cellaring strategy for serious
There is a motion in Europe to completely outlaw tobacco sales by 2025
Of course, it's 17 years ahead but if it would go for serious this would hurt tobaccos much earlier. Apparently, what is very poorly understood is that first this will destroy smoking as a recreational activity, whose effect on health is far from being straightforward.

that you should write this. I've just read of $18/50g as being the current price in the UK & higher in Australia! When this issue was raised a couple months back, apart from agreeing with GI that we would flee the left wing for an atavistic existence centred on tarpon fishing in Costa Rica, I decided to start cellaring. I'm not sorry. It makes good economic as well as smoking quality sense. Let's face it - NOT to cellar, knowing what we know, is just plain dumb. The oil & food crises should have moved a few comfort zones.
What gives any of these bastards the right to make our decisions for us? Where the hell does any damn government get off trying to run peoples lives? My country fought a war over taxation without representation. The politically correct anti-tobacco lobby is taxing the shit out of anyone even attempting to use any form of tobacco but where the hell is our representation? All the politicians we even have a choice to elect seem to have all drank the kool aide and are content to let government make our every decision for us. Shennanigans I tell you! This sucks! I plan to enact my five year Costa Rica escape plan. By 2014 I want to have several hundred pounds of pipe tobacco set back then I grab a fly rod, a hammock and a few pipes and it's off to Costa Rica for this GI. Lobsters, beer, fishing and burley. If the phone doesn't ring it's me.

Sorry, just had to say it ;)
The anti's cover all of the political spectrum though, no matter our differences here, among the users of mpc, it feels like the politicians all over the world is our enemies.
Gah, politicians... F*ck 'em all
If I have not seen as far as others, it's because giants have been standing on my shoulders.
I've got a good headstart on it but nowhere near the amount of tobacco I want down there yet. I used to have about a 10 year stash but then fell out of love with one particular tobacco. I had lots of it so rather than tossing it I gave it all to our own tobacco slut (ckr) and now I'm down to about an 8yr supply. My goal if I can get this work situation sorted out is to add about 5 pounds of McClelland 5100 or 2010 (or a combo thereof) to the cellar before end of year. I'll probably also add a few other odds and ends, not more than 40 or 50 tinned blends though. That will put me back over the 10 year hump for sure but still I'm not comfortable. All I can see is (at the best) prices and taxes rising higher and higher. At the worst ... well, 'nuff said. I ***will*** be prepared.

Fine Gael is right wing, christian democrat. So you would be fleeing the right wing. There are idiots of all kinds, especially when it comes to anti smokers.
Edit: I should read everything before I post, henrik posted the same thing, sorry for flogging a dead horse.
Anyway, I will just start growing more tobacco, and start selling it. I couldn't imagine tobacco prohibition. I could be a tobacco pusher, and open a smoke easy?
I don't care what the political slant is of the person posing the idea of illegalizing tobacco sales ... I count them all as morons regerdless.
The sad part is that if the EU goes this way the US will get around to following sooner or later. Gone are the days when our (the US's) politicians had pride in their own country seeing the US as the world leader - no, today's batch of weenies sees us as a poor 2nd rate immitation of the EU and strive every day to mirror the EU's laws and legal decisions. Hell, even our supreme court (highest court in the USA) makes decisions based on EU law rather than on our own freekin' Constitution (which they are sworn to uphold!). I'm ranting. Sorry.
Bottom line - I don't really beleive the EU will manage to get that bill to pass. There are too many smokers (especially in many of the EU countries). When these idiots realize they can't legislate our free will away from us they'll drop back to the old tried and true "tax the hell out of them" idea. Either way, they'll self-righteously get their own way (not the people's way) and someday cripple the tobacco industry. Either way I'll be prepared and be sitting on my patio with a good book and lots of aged tobacco. Put simply, they can kiss my a$$.
Rick Piatt
well, as I said, no matter where in the political spectrum a politician stand, one can bet he/she is anti tobacco. it is as simple as: it is politically correct to be anti tobacco
just had to kick you right wing ppl a bit ;)
all in a good mode though, I do not want to start any flame war on politics here. As Rick stated, it is all about stupid politicians
If I have not seen as far as others, it's because giants have been standing on my shoulders.
leads me to believe that you're from Maine or at least New England. I have a very similar plan and being from the Live Free or Die state my fists clench every time government tries to "protect" us from ourselves. Pretty soon the whole world will be governed by one big seatbelt law.

I've been harping on this for several years now! There will come a time(in our lifetime folks) when tobacco is either outright outlawed or taxed to the point where it might as well be (see Canadian tobacco prices). Start cellaring now! Even if you only put two tins a week away it'll add up fast in a couple of years! Cellar both what you like now and a small stock of things you don't exactly love as your tastes will surely change. It's true! I'm a former decade long (one tin a week) smoker of Dunhill's #965 but now smoke MacBaren's Navy Flake almost exclusively. It's very important to have a variety in your cellar. Virginias are hard to go wrong with as they mellow so nicely. I just popped the top of a 25 year old tin of Dunhill's Virginia Ready Rubbed. It's pure heaven. I have five more away and am damn happy for this fact.....
Best,
D.J.
Sorry. This posted twice for some reason....
as an outright ban but through taxes & by players leaving the industry. A bit like sanctions. I just got one hell of a shock when I noticed that the bulk price of OG is now $60/lb! That makes it pricier than GLP's stuff! The writing is on the wall. The economics will drive it. Anyway, I just got such a shock I headed into TAD & placed a big bulk order with Smokingpipes. Feel a bit better now, but probably need a beta blocker. It'll help me slow down my puffin'. Bloody politicians - hate them all.
People in China won't stop growing flur-cured for a great while. But Perique, Latakia? We can start forgetting right now.
Dock is right, it's time to think wisely and work towards variety.
Actually, I am so pissed off I am speechless.
Misha
As I already mentioned, 2010 and 5100 are the main tobaccos I plan on cellaring this year. Taht being said I still want to put 'some other stuff' aside. That is the idea behind the tins I mentioned. Dock got me thinking though. I pretty much don't like Perique. So naturally I avoid it most of the time. But who knows what the future holds for my preferences. I may just have to grab a few tins of a Va/Per after all.
Rick Piatt
Did you smoke 2010 with a few years in a jar? How does it change? I definitely need to revisit it.
Misha
Perhaps 1OLDGI has the right idea. Maybe it's time to abandon ship and have Captain Bob fly us to the Tropics. Armed with our Kaywoodies, Dunhills, and tubs of Prince Albert, we could easily take over a small forgotten island and make our own government. The only requrement to be a citizen is being a smoker or accepting of smokers. Any anti-tobacco talk would be punishable by exile. We can sit back with our pipes, fishing rods, enjoying paradise, with no threat of some higher tax or a new purposed smoking ban.

I bottled up a bunch of it about 8-10 months ago. I love it when its fresh but must admit its a bit 'bitey' if you puff too agressively. At the 6 month mark I popped the first lid and it was smoother and definately less 'bitey' (but still a bit 'bitey'). The flavor was so complex it was out of this world.
Tobaccoreviews lists the ingredients as: "This is a blend of Eastern and Middle Belt lemon, orange, and orange-red Virginias" ... the complexity of flavor I mentioned is that at times the flavor is sharp, at times sweet, at times like a field of hay. It really does evolve in a single bowl. One of the most wonderful VAs I've ever tasted. If it would just bite less I'd rank it as #1 any day. Surely worth buying at bulk rate.
But, back to your question ... I'll be popping another lid at the 1 year mark. Watch for my review here on MPC ... ***at that time*** if you want to try a sample shoot me a private message and I'll gladly shoot some to ya.
Rick Piatt
I've smoked an ounce or two of 2010 and even liked it (I agree, there was something bitey) but did not come back. Next time I'm going shopping I'll grab a case of jars and will add some 2010 to my stash.
Misha
Think it might be something for me ?
(you know I love BBF as an example)

The first "FLIGHT TO FREEDOM" will be aboard my Cessna Cardinal RG. It is a four-place, high-perfomance, single-engine. Now, on this first flight, I will take "all" of your cellard tobacco up to 450 pounds. I need "full fuel". Then, I'll stash "our" tobacco and head back to pick you guys up. I can take three at a time with me if you pack real light. That is, IF YOU TRUST ME... to come back for you after I stash the tobak!

By the way, I think we'll be headed for Mexico. There won't be many of them left there as they are all coming here! We'll have lots of space to ourselves. Great smokin parties and tequilla!!!

The most precious things must be moved first because when SHTF we can make it on our own. I hope, Bob, you wouldn't mind if I through a few pounds of jewelry and stuff like that together with tobacco?
Misha
we'll need 450lbs for the fishing tackle alone. And what's this jewellery stuff - you into wearing a lot of it Misha? Hell, I don't even think GI's taking underwear.
Just thinking about it. Maybe I should get that boat.
Stieltje, you might like McCleland 2015 - it has a fair dose of Perique. 2010 has none.
We'll see who'll be laughing when you'll try to pay them belly dancers with useless pieces of paper.
Hell, with all these talks about 2010 and now 2015 I have to fight the urge to open a two year old jar of 2015, like I don't have anything better to do.
Misha

You seem to like the 'stouter' blends and the nic level in 2010 is medium like most of the tobaccos I smoke. You may tend to smoke it too fast to get more nic out of it and that spells trouble. But I'll extend the same offer to you - hang in there until I pop that lid and then shoot me a private message with your mailing address and I'll gladly send you a sample.
Flavorwise, its MUCH more complex than BBF ever dreamed of being ... but remember 2010 tends to bite back if you smoke too quickly so you'll have to pace yourself. BBF is, well, you can smoke it as fast as you want and it will never bite ... and its a super VA too ... but not on the 'complexity scale' with 2010 by any means.

Just now got back from the store. My wife (Cathy) says to me... "What did you go and buy a case of quart Mason jars for?" I replied: "Honey, I'll show you why on the the MPC Forum, but I know how long it takes you to pack for a trip, so I think you should start packing for Mexico. And, by the way, honey, I'm making one hell of a big C&D order tonight because the price will be going up soon."
Captain Bob is gonna start cellaring! Now that we all have a plan, I am not going to bother building the Fallout Shelter. If Iran does get the bomb, it's coming here, not Mexico. Instead, I'm investing in tobacco and lots of practice takeoffs and landings at various "heavy" weights. We may need a twin engine. Don't worry, I'm rated Commercial, Muti-engine, Instrument and Instructor.
A word of advice to all of us. Avgas is $6.00 a gallon. Please keep one Mason jar to store your Avgas dollars in for our trip. SH!T... this gonna be fun. I'll even let you guys smoke in the plane.

I'll be back on later tonight. I gotta go play with my new Mason jars!

you are all getting worked up over nothing, just no sense getting your knickers in an uproar. The situation is not that complicated. Simply take this Avril Doyle bitch, put a friggin' gun in her big mouth and blow her friggin' head off. Then shoot the first jacka$$ that open his mouth. If there is an outpouring of grief it is time for the nitro packs.
If they still don't get the point then it is time to really pull out the big guns, Morleysson and cane.
WHO does a lot to push big pharma's cure into veins and it is pretty clear where a lot of their money comes from. As far as the politicians go; the agenda is the only difference between the days when big tobacco greased their skids and today when big pharma is doing the same. Politicions still give prostitutes a bad name and that will never change.
