Pipes & French Roast Coffee...
Seems like a few of us enjoy French Roast coffee. Due to logistics, I can only have it on my days off (Fri. & Sat.). Does anyone else find it enhances your smoking experience, or do you just prefer it to regular coffee? Or both?

Vienna Roast, French Roast, Espresso Roast ... all are super. In particular I love beans from Indonesia (or thereabouts). Unflavored of course. Add a little splenda ... a touch of cream ... oh baby now you're talkin' my language. I have it every day. I buy the beans freshly roasted from a local place ( http://www.coffeexch... ) weekly and grind them every morning ... mmmmm, is it time for another cup yet?
Unfortunately I can't handle smoking my pipe along with a cup of coffee. For some weird reason it gives me a major league sour stomach.

Since I mostly share my coffee pot & FR is not that popular, I have to specifically make it for myself. Mostly I end up, quite happily, with a very good medium roast - often in quantity. Somehow I think Latakia blends work best with coffee: say EMP in the morning, maybe something like Robusto or Abingdon after dinner.
just what I need, another mail order hobby (LOL)...had no idea there were that many different variations on dark roast.

The sound of an evil laugh! They make some gooooood coffee.

I love coffee. Strong, dark roasts that are on the acidic side. No cream, no sugar. I prefer the pipe and the coffee separate, though, as I have yet to find a combination that I enjoy.
I have thought about getting into home roasting, but I doubt that I ever will. One thing that I will get eventually is a nice espresso machine. Not a steam powered cheap-o or one that takes pods, but a good pump model that I can use my own grind in. Nothing better that a nice shot of really good espresso.

Mollbergs blandning-Extra Dark Roast (Red pkg.) Extra Rich Dark Roast. Mollbergs Roast has the highest percentage of Kenyan coffees. Because these Kenyan coffee beans mature slowly, they have a rich and smooth flavor, without any bitterness. Mollbergs Roast is then dark roasted for a smooth, gourmet dark roasted taste and aroma. Today, Zoégas Mollbergs Roast is an authentic Swedish coffee experience.
If I have not seen as far as others, it's because giants have been standing on my shoulders.

Luzianne (coffee and chicory), fresh and black w/ any tobacco will carry forth the day. The morning pot, though, has to be something that SWSL can drink, so I usually wait until I get to work before I brew my daily coffee to accompany the pipe.

It is kind of a pain to grind beans for every pot but I started doing it 25 years ago and the difference was so superior to vacume packed cans I could never go back. Without a doubt there is plenty of avenues to move forward but I am happy with fresh ground french roast or french roast/columbian.
For any of those folks planning to migrate to Costa Rica fly fishing for tarpon, eating lobster and drinking beer; you better make plans for some better beans as Costa Rican beans suck.
Fume in pace, ckr
Maybe stock up on periodic trips back to the states or order it via the internet. Don't suppose I migration will be necessary though, McCain has this.
One of my favorite full bodied coffees is a local Cuban coffee from a company in Tampa called Naviera, it is ground about like espresso and has healthy doses of chicory. The Cubans generally mix it half and half with milk and add sugar. I find that a bit too milky but it is very stiff and very strong coffee. Drink it black with a bowl of 5bros and you can hear your beard growing.

Hi, my name is Corneel and I have a drinking problem.
I don't care about coffee one bit, as a matter of fact, I drink liters of the stuff a day. Quite literally. What you get with quantities like that is that quality will invariably suffer.
Yet I don't care. Heck, I've been known to say -- and practically mean it, too -- that I'd drink pond water if it had caffeine in it.
Easily pleased, I know.
Cheers!

I'm (also) crude when it comes to coffee. The only thing I know about coffee, is how to put it in the machine and wait for the water to trickle down to the pot. When that's all done, I'll drink the whole pot and start over.
Sometimes I wish I had more finesse, but I'm a grunt.
I love coffee, but I'm sort of in the same category as Corneel.
Coffee and Pipe go well together, but so does Ice water, Whisk(e)y and basically any other beverage I can think of. Oh! Hot chocolate with ground chili! .. mmh. rant over.

I prefer regular comlumbian coffee, the lighter the roast the more caffine and goodness in the cup. If I'm really looking to just enjoy a cup of coffee by itself I'll go for vienna roast though.
I enjoy the dark roasts. In particular, I really enjoy a big mug of Kenyan coffee, black, thats it. Kenyan is acidic, most coffees are alkaline. I find it clean and crisp. Just perfect when I sit back with an old Charatan XL, packed with Kendall Dark.
Great for some quality downtime

Ethiopian Sidamo are my favorite coffees. I grind the beans for each pot. We drink more cofee from more than a pound of beans a week. For me, coffee is the perfect complement for a pipe. It goes well with all the types of tobacco I smoke such as burley flakes and English blends.

My only experiences with both of these is from Starbucks. Didn't care for either. Well, the Sidamo was sort of ok. The Kenya in particular was so acidic that it reminded me of drinking coffee mixed with grapefruit juice! Now that I've found this local roasting house I've got to try the Kenya bean again. Its amazing how the roasting process can affect the bean. Well duh. What I'm saying (poorly - its early in the morning ok!) is that the same bean roasted at two different coffee houses will taste completely different. From Starbucks I only like the beans from Indonesia. But so far from this local roasting house I seem to love everything. Normally a Columbian is far too mild for me but man they roast a super flavorful Columbian too.
Its funny how some habits cross over various hobbies. With tobacco I generally prefer single leaf tobaccos - like SG's FVF is generally preferred over most VA/Pers or Va/Burleys. When it comes to coffee I likewise like single bean coffees. But this roasting house is getting my attention with some of their blends lately. Maybe its time to give some blended tobaccos a 2nd chance too huh?

Now, that's my kind of coffee. Love the acidic roasts.
Since my last post on this thread, I have decided that an espresso machine is not in my future. I do not do things half-assed, and for me to get exactly the machine that I want along with the grinder that I want is more than I am willing to pay. I would not make it enough to justify the cost.

I toyed with the idea of getting one and then saw the price tag ... damn near scared me away from coffee completely.

I love to drink coffee with my morning bowl. I agree with ckr, grinding your own beans everytime is the only way to go. I drink whole bean 8`o clock columbian. I grind it a little longer to make it stronger.
