Vanilla
Hello Everyone,
Although I'm not a huge fan of aromatics I have found myself keeping a few on hand for when I'm around people. Because I want to be a good ambassador for our hobby I figure that vanilla is a pleasant stink! I'm wondering if there is a Vanilla aromatic that will not turn my tongue into a charred wreck but also be flavorful and nice smoking. I know this is a tall order but if there is anyone out there that smokes a vanilla blend please let me know what you think and what you have tried.

Caledonian Highland Cream is my go to vanilla blend. If I'm out of that one, I go for Mac Baren Vanilla. They're not goopy and reasonably nice smokes.

Hi Chris.
I've heard good things about the MacBaren Vanilla Cream. I've never tried it myself, but friends have told me that it has an excellent room note.
I smoked only Lane Captain Black White Label for over 20 years....still smoke it occasionally. Give it a try, the non smokers love the smell of it.
The aromatic that I smoke nowadays is a dry one and it has very pleasant room notes..it is by Lane and the tobacco is called Black Raspberry. You can get it in the Bulk section of many online tobacconists.

I'll third the MacBaren Vanilla.

I find it hard to categorize aromatics by their flavor. Vanilla flavor never tastes vanilla to me. That said, a really sweet (more caramel) tasting tobacco that burns all the way down with nary a bite would be Troutstream, available from Pipes & Cigars. Its rated as a 4-star tobac in TobaccoReviews.com (although I take those reviews with a grain of salt). Troutstream has a very pleasant, though heavy room note. If you like Captain Black (white) or 1Q, you'll love Troutstream.
For a lighter aromatic that has excellent burn qualities and is also bite free, may I suggest Jefferson Street by Milan Tobacconist. It probably has the "vanilla" flavor you're after although its described as rum raisin in flavor. I've smoked five of the blends from Milan Tobacconist and they were all bite free. They have an extensive selection of aromatics at surprisingly reasonable prices ($26.95/lb) for high grade tobaccos. They may be worthy of contacting.
Aromatics have a bad reputation for biting which probably stems from some of the drugstore abominations available in the past. However, I have found many aromatics that don't bite. Conversely, I've also run into many non-aromatics that do bite.
I must second Moshee's rec' of Trout Stream. This stuff is really GOOD. I would also suggest Dan Tobacco "Milonga." Milonga is a very good smoke that won't incinerate your tongue. I am far from being an aromatic fan, and I still like both of these greatly.

Vanilla, like rum and chocolate, can be very effective flavoring w/o completely ruining the taste of the component tobaccos. These flavorings, IMHO, remove any edge from the base blend. PA has a cherry vanilla which isn't wonderful but very smokable. C&D has a latakia based blend, Snug Harbor, w/a touch of vanilla that is also quite nice.

Chris,
Throw me a pm with your wishes for a vanilla baccy blend and I'll get something made for you at the Paul Olsen store. I'll get a tin for myself as well and we can see how it fares compared to the brands mentioned earlier.

I enjoy MacBaren's Vanilla Cream, which smokes dry and cool while producing a very pleasant aroma and room note. I tend toward aromatics for the most part, but I've learned to steer clear of heavy casings and excessive flavors (I'm never even tempted by anything fruity, for instance). Another blend that seems to be popular among nonsmokers for its aroma is Blue Note, which I think is delicious. For the most part, I get lots of compliments on the aroma of my pipe with these blends.
