Bulk Virginia Flake
At the moment I'm on a mission to find a decent brace of good bulk Va flakes. They do need to be bulks - I want to bottle & store some of them & I want the price advantage. I also want to smoke them a lot now. I'm looking for a good half dozen & they must be available by the pound. And they MUST be flakes. I'm excluding the Navy Flakes - I want pure Va flakes, stoved or unstoved, but NOT flavoured. A little Perique or Burley in the mix (ala OGS) is quite acceptable.
So far my list is:
SG FVF (Pipes & Cigars)
SG Best Brown Flake (Pipes & Cigars)

Give www.CornellandDiehl.... a try. They have great VA flake in my humble opinion!

You already listed the two that instantly popped into my mind.

That would be grand.
Mcbaren makes a flake
For the life of me I cant remember the name or number

It seems that we've struck out on this one Muddler ... did you have any luck coming up with other bulk VA flakes? Originally I also thought of McClelland 2010 but thats a broken flake and you were very specific about wanting just flakes ... what else is out there in bulk?
Rick Piatt
I would have suggested the blends that you have already mentioned.
But hey, check out the web pages of samuel gawith and gawith Hoggarth. sometimes a light bulb might appear, one have forgotten about blend X.
Good luck :)
This is my Pipe. There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My pipe is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.

for your insights & comments. I definitely have a few to add to the list. The C&D stuff I will try - my beloved Bayou Morning is pressed to flake, I discovered. Rick, McC 2010 & I are extending our affair right now, so I guess I'll need to include broken flake. And with it a veritable gaggle of backies come honking through the gate. Guess I'll need to start again.
I thought I remembered you listing 2010 in a daily smoke thead ... hey, maybe the memory isn't gone after all! I've grown to seriously appreciate 2010 over nearly any other VA. Perhaps the only exception is SG's FVF. I don't have a mason jar open right now because I'm trying to get through all these new tobaccos I purchased in the past few months but rest assured when the "opens" get back under 10 I'll be reaching for that 2010. I'm experimenting with how it ages right now. I believe the batch I jarred up was dated about 6 months ago ... when it hits the 1 year mark if its as astounding as I believe it will be I'll probably buy about 5-10 pounds of the stuff and jar it up. (no worries about jarred tobaccos losing their seals!)

is about a year old now. It's quite dry. And it's the better for both. The ketchup scent has disappeared. It's become a very good Va flake (subsp: Broken). I like it. I've found the same with the Va#22, although I've probably overdried that. I'm now enjoying both - after grumbling about them earlier. I too will be stocking up. Actually, I have a pound of 5100 (which I've bad-mouthed) put away. I suspect I'll be eating humble pie on that in a few years time too.
to C&D, I am quite sure they will accomodate your special order of Bulk VA Flake. Have you looked over their Flakes on their website? Most are available in pound sealed tins. And, perhaps they will also sell it loose in one pound bags, if you prefer. They are very accomodating.

Muddler,
Here is the response I received from Craig Tarler at C&D...
"Bob:
We can do this but I have to know what flake they want; i.e., plain bright VA, or one of our Simply Elegant series.
Craig"
Give him a call and he'll fix you up! Mention "Captain Bob" and anyone you speak to there will know who I am. However, you probably should speak to Craig for this special order. Let me know how this turns out. I may be doing the same thing.

up some Peretti's Oxford Flake. While it was a very good flake the price per pound was high enough to keep me on hold. It was similar to Rattry's Marlin Flake and had I been aware of the cost per pound I would have paid a bit more attention and did a comparison.
Fume in pace, ckr
I am going to order 10 pounds of Va flake from C&D in 1lb tins. I haven't quite made up my mind on the final blends yet, but they will include Bayou Morning, Opening Night & Red Carpet. Flakes are not generally available from etailers & are, IMHO, superior smokes. They must be ordered directly from C&D at $50/lb tin. Now, I would like to ask Craig to 'sharpen his pencil'. Would any of you like to include yourselves in for a lb or two? What I'm saying is I'm going to place a MPC Special Order which will cover your individual orders & include for a special price as long as you quote the MPC code. This does NOT apply only to flakes but to ANY C&D backies.
Please give me an indication of your support. Thanks.
Please count me in!

What is this special price? If it is the aforementioned $50/pound then I will have to pass. There are many retailers here in the US that resoundingly beat that price.

is for Flake. Yes, this is rather steep. However, I'm suggesting a bulk order of ANY C&D backy. They're not all $50/lb! Far from it. Check out the website. I expect Craig to beat the retailers price. Bloody hell, he should!

I have spent considerable time promoting C&D since joining this Forum. I will email Craig Tarler and encourage him to consider a discount for our members. If there is a problem with it, it may be because he needs to protect his dealer's. I have always paid full retail when ordering from C&D directly. I did ask for a personal discount recently but was turned down. I order about $2000 of tobacco per year from Craig!

I have encouraged Craig to take the discount suggestion seriously as our forum community holds his tobacco and service in high regard. Below is my email:
Hi Craig,
I have done considerable missionary work promoting C&D on this Forum. There are a lot of C&D smokers that are members from all over the world. You are highly respected for your tobacco products and your customer service. The fellow (Mike Mitchley) that I referred to you for a large order of Flake is saying he is requesting consideration for a discount for Members of this Forum community. For what it is worth, and from what I have gathered, I do think that a discount would be worth your while. I do understand from our previous communications that this may not be possible. However, it is evident to me that these guys are some serious tobacco buyers and would prefer to deal with you directly as I do. So, whatever you do is fine with me. I just wanted to give you my 2 cents worth. Have a great day!

I misunderstood. I thought that $50 per pound was the special price for all blends. Way wrong on my part.
For what it is worth, I can buy my regulars, OJK and Haunted Bookshop, online for $30.00 and $33.20 per pound respectively. Bayou Morning Flake, one of the blends that you mentioned, can be found for $42.00 per pound via two half-pound tins.

On the C&D website, Haunted Bookshop is $37.50 per one-pound tin plus a tax and shipping and handling charge. Where are you getting yours?

Pipesandcigars.com has the bulk C&D in question. Plus, smokingpipes.com has many C&D half-pound tins for $18.15, for a total of $36.30 per pound.

When you order flakes keep in mind that #170 Bright Flake and #517F Virginia Flake are called flakes, I believe, in the "American" sense. Citing M. M. Sherman's All About tobacco
Flake Cut (American) is a slightly larger version of a cube cut tobacco that has irregular shapes ranging in size from 1/8" to 1/4" and has been cut from unpressed leaf tobacco.
At least this is how I would describe what I have. Also, if you did not smoke Bayou Morning Flake before I'd advise to try it in smaller amounts first. It's quite different from Bayou Morning. Both are good but in a different way.

We have done group buys in the past and would consider this. So far I have not been contacted by anyone other than Capt. Bob about this. Whole subject is open for consideration and we'll help in any way we can.
Thanks for considering our blends.

Thank you, Craig, for your encouraging response. I'll leave it in Mike's (Muddler) hands since he started this and wants the big Flake order. I'll continue to monitor the topic in hopes we can work something out for our members desiring C&D tobacco.

I have been advised by Craig Tarler at C&D that he will work with us on a "group buy" but not individual distribution. In other words, the person ordering would have to distribute the tobacco. Depending on where you live, it could drive the cost up and negate any savings we hoped to gain. Therefore, I think the matter is mute at this point.

Can anyone advise of a cd burley. I like all the codgers, as well as Mc B burley. No perique or hard aros. I would be into a group buy.
Regards,
Dave
Sure beats ciggs!
Yours truly is, as you know, sited in that area of Africa upon which it sits. This makes the logistics of central distribution nonsensical at best, bizarre by any other approach. Sorry chaps, it's not going to work. There also seems to be some wierdness in pricing, although I guess this will be sorted. So we're on our own.

I keep my favorite Burley around and smoke it regularly. It is C&D "Safe Harbor Flake". Been smokin this consistently in rotation for two years and it is an excellent Burley Flake.
