Bur/per ?

Bur/per ?

I have been looking around a bit for a 'pure' Burley and Perique blend, there seem to be at least a minuscle bit of VA thrown into the mix.

So, what do you say about blending some McClelland Perique with some 5 brothers ?

I have not yet smoked any 5 brothers, but the reviews point out that this is a very fullbodied smoke as is. Will the perique sort of drown here ?

Chuck 15% in there...

and you should get a good hint of it. I'm starting to add it to everything...great on burgers:(

And with McCleland

you don't need ketchup on the burger either. OJK is 25% Perique, so if you really want to pepper up the smoke, you know how far to go. The Va's would add some sweetness & another dimension. You could alwayd add some later.

Warning!

While I detected no perique in 5bros, I did notice a somewhat peppery taste. Not exactly like perique, closer to large quantities of fresh ground pepper on food. I recommend smoking 5bros plain first and going from there in small increments if you still want to add perique. One thing is for sure, 25% perique on top of 5bros would definitely wake you up (probably blow the top of your head off). If, as it turns out you are a true freak of nature, try out 50% 5bros, 25% perique, 25% Latakia. Can't speak for you or anyone else but I for one have always found 5bros plenty strong enough.

while I am at it

if not 5 bros, any burley a bit milder that would blend nicely with perique ?

I am in the mood for some experimenting :)

If I am going to order, I might just go on and get some other samples, and a 50 gram tin of perique will probably last a long time.

If you like it...

any burley will probably do. I added perique to Carter Hall and it was fantastic. I have a bag of generic stuff here that I may perk up a bit.

sounds like a very good plan

This is very close to my original plan, minus the latakia, something about that taste that does not at all agree with me...

Muddler mentioned OJK, I am smoking some of that atm, and I like it very much, found a nice pipe for it today as well. Did not realize it has that much perique in it though.

Anyway, thank you for your input, good advice as always :)

Perhaps something like ERRd w/ perique might be satisfying; try 5:1 to start. In fact, why not try ERRd and 5Bros 1:1 and then add perique to this mix in something like 7 Mix :1 perique.

I Predict

The 1:1 Edgeworth RR'd and 5Bros will win you over and you won't find addition of perique necessary. I've smoked a good bit of this blend recently and it really is very good.

found some good stuff

This is what I am getting for my mixing experiments

FIVE BROTHERS - 50g Pouch x3

McClelland Bulk BLENDING PERIQUE

Gawith Hoggarth Bulk KENDAL KENTUCKY

GRANGER - 2oz Sample

EDGEWORTH READY RUBBED 2oz (57g)

Cornell & Diehl Bulk BLENDING PERIQUE - GRANULATED
2 oz.

Missouri Meerschaum MISSOURI PRIDE

Probably not much difference between the two diff perique brands. but why not get two at the same time.

smoking this stuff now, and you are right, it does win me over. What a taste, what remarkable burning characteristics. nicotine level is where it should be, ie, wet forehead strength.

I have blended another batch, same proportions, but with perique in it as well. will try that later on. (Here I followed the advise of Morleysson, about 1:7 perique.)

A third batch will be blended soon, this time with 'gar leaf, the new love of mine. the cigar leaf blends superbly with ERRd + C&D perique.

Stieltje where are you getting your 5Bros from? I haven't found a shop I wanted to deal with that sells it outside of America.
