Exhausted Rooster Review

Exhausted Rooster Review

Josh asked if anyone had tried this & I replied that I had. Well, the backy's had a couple of day's to settle down after opening the tin, so here's a review:

It is described By C&D as “A Toney/Tarler blend. C&D's annual blend for the 2008 Chicago Show. A tasty flake of Virginias, Dark Fired Burley and a dash of Perique.”. I’ve described the scent on first opening the tin as scarily similar to that of Haddo’s Delight. But the backy didn’t hold this scent as long as HD does. It’s a dark flake & was presented at the perfect moisture level. It lit with no difficulty. In spite of the just a dash of Perique, it was the first thing I noticed – a flush that soon passed, softened by the Va’s. But the Perique was there, a little touch of spice on the tip of my tongue. And then the Burley came through, nutty & solid, straightforward but rounded. Until two-thirds of the way through the bowl. Then the most remarkable change occurred: it all backed off & was replaced by a soft, creaminess – quite perfect. A bit like Lindt chocolate. I could detect no dominance of ANYTHING at this stage, apart from a certain smugness. At this stage too, my wife noticed the smoke & commented that it smelt wonderful & mild. The pipe is a Pete deluxe which I’d just given a quick reaming with my pipe tool. It is one of my older pipes – I have a soft spot for it since I bought it from the Pete shop in Dublin. Now I’m about ¾ of the way down the bowl. The cream is still all there but the perique is creeping in again.

This is a very fine smoke indeed.

Thanks for the review

The reference to Haddo's kind of puts me down since I had to air Haddo's for a while before I start tasting anything else but alcohol.

I have two tins of the Rooster but cannot see popping one before September. I'll see it then.

If you haven't tried Epiphany yet give it a whirl too. It really is tasty stuff.

Thanks for the review

This is another tobacco I've been wondering about, so far all reports I've heard have been positive. I'll also second the recommendation of Epiphany, it's one of my regular smokes.

Smokey

Thanks for the informative

Thanks for the informative review, Muddler! Looks like I've a number of C&D blends to try out.

Cheers!

TC

I hesitate

I have often said I never tried a C & D tobacco that Ive liked - I know Im alone - but after that review Im tempted to give Exhausted Rooster a try. Thanks for feeding my PAD.

I have since received...

Exhausted Rooster in a sample pack from C&D. I am not real fond of rubbing out flakes, however, the effort is worth it.
I would agree with what Muddler wrote in all respects and have enjoyed my sample. Will I order it in the future? Maybe, but not by the pound like OJK & HB.

Another take on this blend, but

not drastically different.

Yes it is a fairly dark flake but there is also a noticeable amount of light leaf in it also. The smell is both sweet and grassy with a just a slight hint of vinegar in the background. Rub out. No. Dried? No. Just fold, stuff, tamp and light. Top of the bowl was almost total VA flavor and slowly the burley creeps up. The perique was not at all noticeable at first and with 1/4 of a slightly bent pot going now it is just beginning to emerge.

Like Muddler, my first bowl did make quite a transition somewhere just below the half way mark. It went from a brow wetting and spiciness into a velvety smooth smoke so quickly I was pretty floored and finished up without much change. Not sure this bowl will follow that path as it is about a half inch shorter.

Bit Later; The perique had maintained its presence all the way down. It was when I tamped the ash for the finish that is when it was suddenly gone and replaced by that smooth creamy smoke. Hmmm?!
