One of those special smokes

One of those special smokes

Greetings,
Yesterday was one of those lazy cool fall like days. I was sitting on the porch enjoying a strong cup of coffee and thought about what tobacco I was going to fire up. I went down to the cellar and began looking through all the jars. Best Brown Flake looked really inviting. I bought a pound in April and broke it down into wide mouth jars. I opened one up and man what a smell. A hayfield in a jar. The tobacco was really moist when I received and put it up. When I opened the mason jar it was still pretty moist. I removed a few strips of flake and layed them on a plate. My next decision was, do I rub them out or do I fold them. I decided to rub them out and let them sit for a hour or so.
After the hour I selected a Comoys full bent and loaded the pipe semi
firm.I then fired up a char, tamped, fired. The first few puffs were heaven.I sat and sipped that pipe for almost 2 hours. I can't remember a bowl of tobacco I enjoyed as much. Maybe it was the lazy, cool day, or the pipe tobacco combo. I can only hope I can find that combo again. Best Brown is awesome!
Regards,
Dave

Fall is Always the Start of Great Smoke Season

Regretably however, fall in these parts seems to start right before Christmas. It'll be rain forest hot here for a good long while yet. I have had a few of those great, very remarkable smokes in the summer but they do seem a bit more common in the cooler time of year.

Best Brown

I am on my first tin of Best Brown and love it. I foresee more tins in my future.

Glad you had a great smoke.

I have some in storage

Aging, will try this out at christmas.

A little bit too mild nicotine wise, but it tastes so great I find myself smoking a bowl now and then.

Best Brown

Your right Stieltje this baccy is mild, more milder than I smoke most of the time. I find the flavor is what keeps me lighting it up. I will open another jar around Xmas and see how it ages. This jar is about 6 mos. I will get another pound when I have a TAD attack. I've been staying off the retail sites!!

Better fresh than at 2 yr old

The Lakeland topping becomes more obvious with some age almost to the point of distraction.. The Va of course is still as smooth as silk.

Since the lakeland scenting does not bother me at all, I will keep some bbf in storage :)

I loved BBF. I love it new. I like it aged. The only difference is how strong the lakeland topping gets - its actually quite pronounced. As I said, it gets so pronounced that it really is quite distracting - and remember, I like this topping too! Anyway, age it and let us know what you think when it gets a couple of years on it.

When I first popped the lid on the 2 year old stuff I thought what the heck have I done? I let it air out a little and that didn't help with the topping very much. After about a week of being open (and ignored by me) the lakeland topping was much subdued - enough that I could smoke it. Frankly I'm sorry I cellared as much as I did ... now I have to smoke this stuff. And the sad part is how much I truely love the brand new stuff. I've really got to rethink this whole aged tobacco schtick.

Rick

Have you cellared any other SG tobacco, like FVF ? does it behave like BBF ?

I will try some of my cellared stuff at christmas, the rest will be for 2 years, hopefully the cans I keep it in is tight enough.

perhaps you can ebay it off ? or trade with someone ?

Anyway, thanks for the warning

I just started a blog thread on cellaring ... check it out for my comments on other SG tobaccos (and one G&H).

Maybe I'm blowing it all out of proportion today ... as I said in the bottom of the blog thread ... Must think this through. Maybe I'm just in a bitchy / crotchety today.
