Walnut
I've picked up a sample of this blend just to see what all the hubbub was about. Before ordering the sample, I didn't really pay too much attention to what the blend contained, so today I decided to look it up.
Among other things like Burley, Kentucky, Cavendish, Virginia, Latakia and Turkish it also contains Maryland.
Now what the heck is Maryland tobacco? Anybody know?

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on Walnut...I mean I like OJK...but I have never been much of a Turkish fan...but the cost of these drugstore blends...well...it makes me wonder...if I like them just as well as a blend that costs three times as much...well just do the math...anyway...let me know what you think of it...
Cheers,
Josh
is added to blends for its burning charactaristics and apparently is not produced as much as it used to be...many growers were bought out to grow other products.

Think bright VA leaf grown in the sandier soils of MD. It is
a light air-cured tobacco which goes almost entirely into cigarette production. From one-fifth to one-fourth of the crop is exported. Not an eventful leaf, but softens the heavier condimental leaf.
Overall, Walnut may be one of the best OTCs available. It was the mainstay of the Middleton group BEFORE PA and CH were acquired from RJ Reynolds. There should be enough diversity in the blend to meet most anyone's smoking needs. I always have a tub about the house, it's that good and relatively inexpensive.

So far, I'm liking this blend a lot. I usually smoke heavier English blends, but this is a very nice change of pace. I could imagine this working well as an all day smoke.
There is a presence of sweet notes mixed in with the latakia and turkish. The cool burning characteristics of the other leaf makes every blend together very nicely.
The flavor of the smoke is something else entirely. Somthing else than what I had imagined that is. For those who dislike Englishes, this would probably be a great go between. There is something in there for everybody, and this is very likely to work wonderfully as an all day smoke. It's not too light and not too heavy.
Sometimes, there's an aroma that could be chocolate .. coffee .. honey .. It's strange, but very enjoyable.

After thinking for a long time that Walnut actually tasted like walnuts (ugh), I was educated and ended up purchasing a tub. After I smoked a couple of bowls, I promptly packed up my tub of Carter Hall and shipped it off to someone else to smoke. Not that I do not enjoy Carter Hall, but I know that when it comes to choosing between a bowl of CH or a bowl of Walnut, I will reach for the latter every time.

Walnut is very good
But I think I will keep my PA and CH around between the three If a lot of tobacco's go off the market then I will still be in great shape

when I think my tastes become too "developed" for Walnut. It would be a flawed affection, baseless at that. Walnut has something for everyone. It's a delightful, light smoke that brings in different flavours & depths throughout the bowl. If this stuff cost twice the price, it would have a high-end cult following. Now it's just for smokers who appreciate it for what it is - a really good, all day smoke with some remarkable nuances. Think I'll have a bowlful.
I agree that this is a go to all day type smoke. I liked it enough to buy 2 tubs on my last order. I was getting free shipping so the price was right. I'm hoping the closed second tub will stay good for quite a while. I'm wondering if I should break it down to Jars?

Dave

and will add it to my try-me shelf. I am such a pushover.

The 14oz tubs are plastic right? Plastic breathes ... its not air tight. Anyone have experience keeping some of these tubs for over a year? Personally, I'd jar it just to be safe.

I know, I know. Since GI got chopped off at the knees on that other forum I felt some self-moderation might be in order. So pushover is much more acceptable when speaking in pubic.

On that forum you can be a pushover ... here you're a slut.

Love Walnut... it will forever be in my rotation. Thanks to the over sized sample GI sent me. I must say GI, if you were a retailer, you would be out of business with samples like that. It's your fault... YOUR FAULT I am addicted to Walnut. Oh well, not a bad thing.

Rick,
I think your right and will break it up in jars when I get the chance. Better safe than sorry.

I smoke about a tub of Walnut a month. If it became the only blend available, I'd happily still smoke a pipe.
If I had to find one fault with Walnut, it would be it's very mild(nicotine-wise). Have any of you had good results mixing Walnut with say 5 Bros., perique, or something more potent?
have you hit the nail on the head. I myself never, I smoke the stuff like the blender intended (in an elitist tone). However, here you will find plenty of mix nuts and 5Bros. is a favored cut.
Opps, I forgot about Farter Hall

Didn't understand what you meant by Farter Hall. I thought it might have been a nickname you had because you didn't like it. It's all clear after reading your Head or Tails blog.
Just ordered a tub after all the talk. Even added a few pouches of SWR (just for you, Matches) to get the free shipping.

SWR is the next OTC burley on my list. I have been anxious to try some of that.

Walnut comes in a 12 oz tub,
PA and CH, a 14oz.
Walnut is Middletons Flagship.
It's a sweet english. The aroma is woody with an incense like quality.

Actually these tubs keep the tobacco fresher. When you put the lid on, pump it until it stops pumping. It gets all the air out of the tub! I have a three year old tub of Prince Albert and it's fresh as a daisy! My Half & Half can, I cut out aluminum foil around the parimiter of the can and put it on top of the tobacco and that does the trick.
