What recommendationds do you have to add to my list?
It's time for my, more or less, quarterly, order to Pipes & Cigars to rebuild depleted stocks. Heres what the order looks like so far:
Englishish:
Dunhill EMP, 965
Penzance
Va's:
MacBaren Va#1 (a new one, it got really really good on me)
GLP Laurel Heights (another new love)
Marlin Flake (an 'all day' favourite)
Old Gowrie
Orlik Golden Sliced (Thanks to an outspoken member of this forum. This is good stuff)
Sam Gawith Full Va flake (haven't tried it yet. You guys have talked it up)
GLP Embarcadero
VaPers:
Bayou Morning (goes into a pouch for 'all day' use)
Dunbar
Burleyish:
OJK
3 Friars
Haunted Bookshop (my favourite burley blend)
Stonehaven
Walnut?? where does that fit in? It's talked up a lot.
Notable ommissions are McClelland blends. I cannot bear ketchup any longer. I have tried in vain for months now to dry the casing out of this stuff. I've now given up.
I know this is a fairly long list - & quite frankly I'm surprised at the Va representation - but I would appreciate your suggestions on additions/ things that I should try. I usually only get about 4 or 5 shots at this a year.
Your proposals please gentlemen of the cured leaf...

Back to where it's at for me. Walnut is a codger burley but a very special one. There's sort of a mild background English sort of taste but burley is clearly running the show. The background taste is, dare I say, a bit like Squadron Leader only turned way down. The up front taste is straight burley. I think if you mixed Squadron Leader and Prince Albert the result would likely resemble Walnut.

I would only slightly disagree. Walnut is a "gimme", at least once in every smoker's life. SL and PA only hints at the complexity of the blend. And, a most unusual, and I find very accessible, flavor and room note. It is a staple in my home w/ ERRd and 5Bros, because it falls among so many genres of tobacco blends. Since you've also decided to venture into burleys/VA/perique, you may also want to add C&D Scot's Heather.

Nice selections - you are a fine specimen representing the best of tramps. There is fair representation and good leaf in your order. The one thing that I do not see, and maybe you have a sufficient supply, is a couple of tins of a cigar leaf. A tin or two of Rubusto or Purple Cow (a hi-gi) would round out that order. While I do not smoke a lot of cigar leaf I appreciate it being in the rotation and smoke it when on a tobacco bender.
Again, Nice order - keep your lines wet and your bowl full.

Purple Cow Rocks The House! Another gem from the Philly Croatian!

VAs: Sam Gawith's Full VA Flake!
Burleys: MacBaren Navy Flake!
Rick Piatt
MacBaren's Navy Flake! A classic tobacco that's got it all!Great taste, great room note, easy to pack, slow burning rate!
If it were a woman I'd marry it!
Best,
Dock
But I would recommend SG - 1792 Flake (or cob plug)
perhaps some GH - Dark birdseye.
I don't have that much experiance with VA/pers at all, but Sam Gawith - St James Flake is a true treat. and not as strong as the other two I have recommended
This is my Pipe. There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My pipe is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My pipe without me is useless. Without my Pipe, I am useless
I'll keep my eyes open for one as I have some Gold Brick that I was planning using a razor on.

For your suggestions. I actually found some SG Va Flake as well as some McB Navy Flake in my stash - unopened. Good grief! Needless to say, it was immediately attacked. And superb they both were. Robusto was an ommission. Purple Crow will be added. I couldn't find Scots Heather at P&C - tch tch Scotty. However, what I did pick up was C&D Sunday Picnic, & with it an iniquitious plan of Mugabean proportions: a smoke-off between Embarcadero & Sunday Picnic. Both red Va flakes with Izmir, so why not?
And I WILL try Walnut.
And I am absolutely mystified by ckr's last post...
Thanks chaps.
perhaps some GH - Dark birdseye.
That'll put hair on the hair on your chest. It's the most approachable of the dark-fired tobaccos from Gawith Hoggarth. For a taste of the darkness without the nicotine penalty, try some Kendal Mixed or Kendal Kentucky. If you want to spoil your day and perhaps vomit into your mouth, go for Dark Flake or any of the ropes.

Henrik's link was to a tobacco cutter @ The Cracker Barrel, sorry to go OT.

Orlik Golden Sliced (Thanks to an outspoken member of this forum. This is good stuff)
It's a shame someone has to speak on its behalf. This stuff is so good, no speeches should be necessary. However - I am happy to carry that burden :) Glad you like it.
