Should I ???
This pipe is so unique it just has my interest peaked enough to maybe ... maybe buy an estate. Thoughts?

10/17/08 - Morleysson - "Other than rubbing two sticks together, or flint and tinder, and lightening takes too long and can be dangerous, I prefer Diamond kitchen matches in the house and the smaller Diamond packs for travel." (on what he uses to light his pipe)
10/17/08 - 1OLDGI - "So Ricky, here's what you do. Pull out a Kaywoodie (make sure it's clean), lock and load a nice bowl of PA, Half and Half, or Edgeworth. Set fire to same. Open a cold Natural Light and enjoy. Sometimes less is more and getting back to basics is a sure fire way to stave off these sorts of existential funks."

If you don't like it or can't clean it up, you may be able to find parts and make a whole new pipe.
Have you seen the smokingmetal site? Really fascinating.
I've got a few Kirstens and I'd really like to try a Falcon and a Comrade and some others.
The only problem is they slow me down here in Israel (so many metal detectors, so little time!)

looks strange to me...I always thought those ones like that looked a bit Frankenstein...but that is just me...I mean it isn't gonna take a huge chunk outta the pocket book...so if you get it and clean it up..you might even be able to turn a small profit if you decide you don't like it.
Cheers,

I bought my first estate pipe a week or three ago. A beautiful little Mastro in almost unsmoked condition. I bought it from Smokingpipes. Like you, I've had some misgivings, although mine have been about what was smoked in it before. My fear is that years of aromatics would render the pipe useless. Perhaps an unreasonable fear, but I'll have to work through it. Anyway, I'm delighted with the pipe &, in the future, I won't hesitate to buy an estate from a reputable source.
My thoughts on the pipe? Yuk.
Frankenstein ... yucky ... yes! I know! Weird screen thingy in the bottom! I know, I know! Its a novelty. I'm thinkin' its just weird enough that it might overcome my anti-estate bias. Looks super easy to clean up - heck I can just unbolt (LOL) the bowl from the aluminum hardware and scrub the hardware in the sink! The bowl will definately need cleaning to make me like it ... but this might just work. In a freeky kind of way.

If you are going to overcome your anti-estate sentiments, why not do it with something that doesn't look like it fell off the engine of a car. Eeek... I just have never been a fan of the Falcon-esque pipes, but to each his own I suppose.

I would say no! NO!!
why ? 'cause it is a filter pipe.
If I have not seen as far as others, it's because giants have been standing on my shoulders.
and then hang it with the dice on your car mirror.

I'm watching it on ebay ... if the price stays low I REALLY might do this! OMG.
Rick Piatt
Oh damn, somebody just raised the price ... but still very reasonable for this abomination ... you know if I get this pipe it simply must be dedicated to codger burleys ...
Damn. I think I'm actually going to do this. 8 hours to go. Maybe I'll forget! Either way, I'm not making a final decision until a half hour before the auction ends ... I want to see how much it goes for before I decide. I mean, I'm curious, and interested, but not very interested (but yes, very curious).

the KW filter was made between 1961-68; there was another filter made from 1951-57 or so. Take a shot, at that price. Really, it's less than a tin of tobacco.

$10, that's a pack of ciggarettes, or two pints. I've spent money on worse things, might as well go for it if it appeals to something in you.
I'm probably the most hardcore KW guy here and I'd pass on that one. My experience with metal pipes has never been great but what do I know? If you're feeling it, go for it.
If nothing else it would make a fine yard pipe. And who knows? You may just fall in love with it. Any pipe that ugly has to have a great personality.

Nope, not going to bid that much for it ... oh well. I bid all I was willing to pay for it and thats all she wrote. God bless the guy (or gal)that grabbed it. I hope it smokes well for them.
I'm probably going to thing about this one in the future and say, "Cheap bastid! You should have bid one dollar more."
Rick Piatt
nobody out bid me and I got stuck with this. Heck doesn't even have a stinger, some push stem varity.

Hey GI, this a legit one.

That one counts, I'd have to do the research but I do believe that there were some supergrains that were push stems at the time. I myself own a 50B supergrain but it's not a four digit and probably quite a bit newer than this one (40s or 50s) It should be a good smoke. What do you think of it so far.

Rick, that pipe is so ugly that my brother would pounce on it in a flash.
Here's one of his prized possessions .. 'nuff said.

I have yet to receive it. Judging from the pictures it seems to be in fairly good shape. Since I am not overly fond of condensers I may have really lucked out. I thought the price was more than fair and was surprised that it went the distance.

That Kaywoodie I was looking at was just "different" ... your brother's pipe is a full "strange".
Rick Piatt
Rick, you can give it a spit shine, but it'll still be ugly :)
