Wanted: Fischer Pipes
Might not have ever heard of em... who knows, but they were a Buffalo, NY based pipe maker back in the 40's. Let me know if ya got any.
Thanks,
JB

Do you have any pictures of these fabled Fischer pipes for us to see? :)
If the pipes have any telling markings (stamps on the briar, stem logo, etc), that would make them easier to locate.

I dont have any pictures of them, however I can work on that. They have a name stamp on the stems. Fischer in script with a tail off the "r" that runs the length of the name and creates an underline essentially. To date, that is the only stamping I am aware of on the pipes. I have seen a Fischer with the name not in script, I would assume this is the same manufacturer, maybe just a different time period.

Justin, you might want to throw your name around with the estate dealers and let them know that you're on the lookout for Fischer's. You might get lucky.

Pictures of your pipes would be helpful. I have discovered that there were two lines of Fishers out there.
One was the pipes I collect. They were local to Buffalo, NY and range in date from the 20's through the 70's. They were hand made and the family has some great history. Not valuable in the collectible sense, but for me, the local history is what makes it.
The second it seems was a pipe shop in Boston, Fishers Pipe Shop. I didn't discover this until recently and am still trying to figure out if their was a family connection to the Buffalo shop. Would just seem a huge coincidence to have two different pipe making families with the same name, but hey, you never know.
If ya get me some pictures Ant, I can give you a little more information.
Lars: Thanks for the tip. I actually have about 30 pipes on hold right now at the B&M, all Fischer's, so I am taking a break from the hunt for now. LOL

I've got a collection of Fischer pipes, around 32 of them. I find them to be doughty, well-made, good smokers. A fine example of the "pipe shop" brands of the 1930s - 1950s, though they weren't a pipe shop. Perhaps not up to the quality of the English from the same time period, but not too far off.
I asked about them on Smokers Forum and got this:
I inquired about this brand earlier and Ben Rappaport gave quite an informative answer:
"For all who enjoy seeing this antique meerschaum pipe, be advised that there were two Gustav Fischers, and the two families were not related. One who set up shop in Orchard Park, New York (House of Fischer), had its origins in Saxony, pipe carvers in the mid-1700s. The fourth generation, August G. and his two sons, Gustave A. and Otto, arrived in the USA after the Civil War. The last of that lineage, Arthur, retired to Florida and passed away about 10 years ago. The other Gustav Fischer Sr. (1846-1937) set up in Boston, Massachusetts at Ehrlich's when it was situated on Washington Street, near the old Faneuil Hall. I used to watch him carve meerschaum in the store front window. This family's origin is Vienna, Austria. His granddaughter lives in Massachusetts, and I own a copy of the oral history-interview with Anna Fischer, the wife of Gustav Fischer Jr. (1887-1975). Sadly, on eBay, there is the occasional offer of a knock-off, a molded resin/epoxy pipe claimed to be a signed by G. Fisher (wrong spelling) and the words "Vienna Exposition 1873," on the plastic mouthpiece, also a wrong attribution, because Gustav Sr. was already in the USA by then and never signed his pipes.
So, there you have some of the story: two G. Fischers, not one. The rest of the story is found in my 1999 book, "Collecting Antique Meerschaums.""
Dock Perry: I'd love to have photocopies of any Fischer information you may have. I have a small bit of literature also. Perhaps we could work out a deal?

I live in Buffalo and Orchard Park is just outside of the city. I have an old magazine article/writeup on the Buffalo Fischer's as well as about 30+ pipes in my collection.
Unfortunatley, the House of Fischer was sold off to a non-tobacco family and eventually closed. Its a shame, they had alot of history here in Buffalo.
If you interested in anything, photo copies, etc, let me know. And by the way... Welcome to MPC !
Oh... and for the record... House of Fischer here in Buffalo was in fact a pipe & tobacco shop. Before they moved out to Orchard Park, they were in fact in downtown Buffalo and one of the premier smoke shops in the city.
