Back to the grind Smokes - October 6, 08

Having failed to get around to my bowl of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky yesterday I have packed it into my fishing pipe. This pipe has sure gotten a lot of use since it came off the bench. An experiment where a yellow stain was used as a contrast applied over a dark navy blue that was sanded back. When finished the two stains bleed somewhat making it most suitable for a leprechaun. Numerous smokes have changed the color.

Looks to be a dark outside, no breeze and scattered stars.

CKR pipe day

Since the quartermaster have given me a pipe, I hereby smoke it.

It will be clean and ready for inspection in the end of the day.

An overcast day down here

with just a few spots of very welcome rain overnight. Working at home today while my partners travel, so it's an easy day. I have PSLNF in a beautifully sandblasted M de P bent pot. Enjoy your day.

Happy Birthday to Me

Birthday Smoke is OJK from the Mandarin. Will also pack some private stock and a Whitehall Apple. Have a great day fellas.

Hey GI

Happy birthday to you etc. (Just imagine me singing it). One step closer to true codgerdom.

Happy Birthday, OLDGI! And

Happy Birthday, OLDGI! And many more....

Happy Birthday GI...

I'll be smoking some Bayou Morning in a Butz-Choquin Daccord in your honor. I have a short week this week...I need to blow off vacation time (Wed.& Thurs.)or I'll lose it. That'll whittle it down to two more weeks.

Smoking and candles

rather appropriate for the day. For GI, my Polish father would say "STO LAT" (literally, May you know a hundred years). My mother, the 3/4 Croat and 1/4 Romany, would say "Sretan Rodjendan". Anyway, Happy Birthday and best wishes this day. Just think, GI, while you were being born, I was probably sneaking my first cigarette under the railroad bridge near my house. Many Camels and Luckies, and Bugler RYO were smoked there.

This morning, it's H&H in a smaller KW #7 as I meandered to work in the dark, lots of coffee on the side.

Sorry about the opening smoke

but at least it was not all Virginia. Since I partly hold you responsible for my dear appreciation of the National Joy Smoke and Kaywoodie briars I would think it appropriate to load this 4 digit with the stuff. Happy Birthday and you can have the day off too.

Monday Monday...

Well, I have an interview today with a law firm at noon, so I essentially have the day off. Aside from being excited about the interview, IMHO you could not ask for a better interview time... right in the middle of the day, so you are obligated to take the day off.

Going to light up some Miss. Mudd in my Kalnitz Dublin before getting dressed. Other pipes will follow, just not sure which yet.

GI's Birthday ... well I just have to smoke a Burley now!

It'll be Edgeworth Sliced in that same Stanwell later tonight in GI's honor. Happy B-Day GI! May you have a hundred more in good health!

Forgot my tamper!

D'oh! I got to the coffee house, sat down with my cuppa joe, got the pipe (a Radice twinbore hawkbill) packed with Margate, and realized that my tamper and my lighter (with its built-in tamper) were back home! I'm sure every pipe smoker has had this experience at least a couple of times. I keep matches in my pipe case but no tamper. How to improvise? I looked around me for anything that might do. I'm not manly enough to tamp with a finger--that just sounds painful and messy. Finally, I went back to my truck and noticed that I had a stray screw, from some past project, kicking around. While imperfect, the flat head served quite nicely as an ad hoc tamper. Disaster averted, I enjoyed coffee, pipe, book, and conversation with several regulars who showed up.

I'll have to buy a few more tampers (I use the "Czech pipe tools" that can be bought for a couple of bucks) and scatter them about the various aspects of my life so that one will always be near to hand.

I have frequently

used a 2 1/2 #10 wood screw. Does a fine job.

Change of pace....

Little Mississippi Mudd after supper. Settling in with a good book and my pipe. Perfect end to the day.

Haunted Bookshop...

in a Kaywoodie billiard. I think I own a dozen pipe tampers...several at work, home, vehicle, and on my keychain. Large common nails are my favorite stand-in if I happen to get caught short.

Happy Birthday OLDGI...

...So how old are you?

Been a very busy Monday in the insurance business. Everything from Medicare Supplements to Prescription Drug Plans, to Personal Lines insurance package to Term Life. Business is good despite this economy... at least for now.

My clients were treated to Captain Bob's Blend today. I always ask... if they don't object, I smoke my pipe (and so do they... ETS!)

Thanks So Much

Thanks so much, friends, for the birthday greetings and the ceremonial burning of codger burlies in my honor. Today I'm 46. It was a dicey start for 1FutureGI. I was supposed to be a Christmas baby but was born on 06 October 62 weighing in at 2 lbs 2 oz. Premature babies are not that big a deal now but back then, most competent medical authorities told my folks that the smart money said I was probably going to die. Luckily I made liars out of the lot of them. Very bad and chronic asthma and bronchitis was my next hurdle. Midwest winters were no help and my mother often told stories of me dying in the ambulance on the way to the hospital and subsequently being revived. After one such ordeal, the doctors told my folks to either move somewhere warm (we lived in South Bend, Indiana at the time) or prepare to give me a decent burial. Off to Florida we went when I was just about to turn 5. Eventually I outgrew the asthma. Since, I've had occassion to live in some of the planet's coldest climates and have had no problems at all. As a younger, and far less portly gentleman I also ran marathons and triathlons (maybe one day I'll pick it up again, I'd like to run a marathon on the year of my 50th birthday, I guess we'll see). Apparently the Almighty was saving me for greater things. I'm not sure if they've happened already or are still to come but I can say I'm very happy to be in here pitchin'. Some of it's magic and some tragic but I doubt I'd know one from the other without small samples of each. That's about it for philosophy and history. I'm off for a cold beer and some 5Bros from a four digit KW.

Sorry I'm late.

I just got in here a few minutes ago and saw that the party was well under way. Happy Birthday to you GI! I came prepared in true codger fashion. Solani 656 in a Custombilt.

Happy birthday, GI!

Been in Tampa yesterday, walked into a few of those cig shops in Ybor city, seen all those pipes for drugs and thought "poor GI, I wouldn't want to see this crap on a regular basis and to watch at the same time all this antismoking hysteria".

Back to the bright note. Happy birthday, best wishes, many great bowls ahead!
