Greetings from Oregon

Greetings from Oregon

Nice place you folks have here. I have spent the majority of my adult working life in the timber industry. A number of years ago I saw the handwriting on the wall and knew I was about out of a job so I went back to school and got a bit of training in Civil Engineering. I have been working for the Oregon Department of Transportation for the past 11 years and so far, so good.

I have lived my entire life as a “webfoot” and never saw a reason to change this. My father was a dedicated Kaywoodie / Half-and-Half smoker and I picked up on the hobby from him. I have been a pipe smoker for some 35 years and am still learning something new all the time. My pipe rotation includes Kaywoodie, Peterson, GBD, and a bunch of odds and ends in between. I do like the old burley blends with PA and ERR’d among the favorites but have grown very fond of Virginia, English, and Balkan blends as well. (I will freely admit to really enjoying the smell of a freshly opened tin of McClelland Virginia.)

Welcome to the forum

Think you'll find this a good place to be. It's quite an intimate but zany bunch of buddies. No holds barred. But burleys rule it seems.

Welcome

Welcome, D.B. Cooper.

I have tried very few tobaccos that I thought were out and out BAD. Most are good, just some are better.

I am one of the few folks I know that actually hopes he survived the ordeal and got away with it. He was an original.

Welcome Aboard...

Please take your seat and fasten your seat belt (so you can't attack the beautiful Flight Attendants) and please honor the "smoking" sign as MPC Airlines is a "Smoking Airline". The only thing we don't allow here is the "Stinky Weed" unless, of course, you are using it for medicinal purposes. However, we ask that you mix a little "Codger Burley" with it to be less offensive.

Well Captain....

I ran plumb out of the "stinky weed" better than 30 years ago. (Or were you talking about Latakia?)

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

from the opposite side of the U.S. I'm a New England born yankee who smokes loads of burley but also have Virginias hidden out of view.

In the Willamette Valley...

I am currently in my last year of architecture at the U of O, but I am originally from the Roseburg area. But, it has been a while since I have been in Oregon...I have been abroad for the last year, and am finishing up with an internship in San Francisco before heading back for school. So, in short...come September, I will be in Eugene, but I am from Roseburg.

where in the Willamette are you from?...I think our little valley is near as large as some of the states in which others of this forum live.

Cheers,

Josh

But originally from Klamath Falls. (Which, as many don't know, has no falls anywhere.)

Great place and great people but sometimes you need to go someplace where a thread stays on topic for at least a page.

Small World

I was born in Bend, but now live in Albuquerque.

Chris.

Welcome, Jim

I'm glad to see that you dropped in. I think that you'll find this site has the quirkiness of GFO with a genuine dedication to pipes and tobacco.

For those who don't know our newest visitant, Jim is most knowledgeable in the ways of the burley leaf, like ERRd, and the Custombilt, the mature smoker's answer to the Hudson automobile. Both fine inventions crafted to provide a pleasant journey to the user.

Sure seems to be a right sociable bunch here.

Chris, I don't know how long ince you have been back to Bend but if any length of time at all, you would not know the place.

Bob, you give me to much credit. But I do admit to being a sucker for an old Kaywoodie or Custombilt. I am starting to appreciate the old Webers and Ehrlichs as well. An old classic American burley in an American made briar from the 40's or 50's......I have seldom had a smoke that will beat it.

To all of you I say thanks again for the grand welcome.
