Hello

Welcome, and thanks for the video.

Been watching it, though I do not know italian. Very much of what is said comes through in other ways though, and it is a very nice watch.

Great to have you here with us Renato. I'll check the video tonight. I won't understand a word of it, but it should be an interesting video none the less. Stick around and post often.

Welcome Renato

And thank you so much for the video. That was really very enjoyable and educational, even though I don't speak a word Italian.

If that video you so graciously shared is any indication of what's coming, I most definitely look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks again, and welcome!

Pipe Lore

Welcome Renato

Very nice video! I have not seen a video of the making of a pipe. Even though I did not understand the language, I certainly could understand what was being done. Thank you for sharing this.

Hello All, i'm glad to see

Hello All,

i'm glad to see that you all like this documentary about my father :)

I'm not a pipe smoker... but when i was with my family, i see all tech progress.

At first, to make a smoking pipe, a week was required.. after some year the time needed was 1 day.

Now i'm trying to stimolate my father to re-start this passion because was very appreciated in Italy.. so i'll tell him all kindly words that you all wrote here.

thanks
Renato

Loved the Video

I speak Italian, and loved it. Every moment of it. I have never seen the process from start to finish. If he starts up again, sign me up for the first one!

Hi folks!

Hi folks! I'm from Italy too, near Venice.
I'm living in a very small island on the Adriatic See (http://www.grado.it/...).
About pipes: I'm a Dunhill's lover. Nice to meet you!

Howdy and welcome! I'm one of those VA smokers you envy. I love Cornell & Diehl TWO FRIENDS-HERITAGE VA blend! I rotate it with my own blend described in another section of this forum.

Boxwood's smoking pipe

Hello All,

seem that my father will return to the pipe making :)

In 20 years, my father, collected a lot of boxwood .. so will re-start to crafting pipes with this heavy wood.

What do you think about this?

thanks for your time
Renato

Boxwood!????

I've used boxwood in making wooden ship models. Isn't this much too soft of a wood for a pipe?

Hello RickPiatt, the Boxwood

Hello RickPiatt,

the Boxwood is one of the wood with majaor density.. in fact in the water it go down.
It is a very hard and dense wood so it's perfect for pipe's crafting and the first pipes of history was made with this wood.

cheers
Renato

wood density...

I don't know what the density of briar is...but boxwood is 59 - 72 lbs/ft^3 which is comparable with cherry at 43- 56 lbs/ft^3...so it is at least harder than cherry...my only question is whether or not there are any troubling resins in boxwood...

Cheers,

Josh

hmm...

well then in comparison to briar at .97 g/cm^3, cherry comes in at 0.7 to 0.9, and boxwood comes in at 0.9 to 1.2 ...so they are all playing in the same ball park...with cherry slightly softer...for comparison doug fir/larch is 0.5 to 0.55 and oak is 0.6 to 0.9 ...

the questions that remain for whether or not a given wood would make good pipes are: quality of grain, evenness of density throughout soft and hard portions of the growth rings...and the kicker...whether or not there is a presence of resins that might prove harmful when burnt during the actual act of smoking the pipe...

Cheers,

Josh

Hello Josh, have you any

Hello Josh,

have you any info about the Boxwood and the resins? My father talk about boxwood like a best pipe's wood.. so if wrong i need to know and report him these infos :)

Thanks
Renato

mmm...

I don't know...I know that some woods such as Walnut and Oak suffer from this problem...but I do not know of any problem like that with boxwood, but I cannot guarantee that...the main problem that I know of with boxwood would be a tendency to check and a lack of pleasing grain like what is found in briar

Cheers,

Josh

Way too sciency for me but it's good to have folks out there like Josh to which stuff like this makes sense. If the world were full of non-science types, we'd all operate on feeling and ambiguity. Thanks Josh for ordering the universe but those like me revel in chaos.

Why not just try it

why just not make a pipe, smoke it, and see if it smokes nice ?

I mean, if there are resins the pipe will taste pretty foul ?

I am sure the man knows what he is doing though, the video should be proof enough :)
