Fold and Stuff
is the usual method almost always even when the cut is in disk form. However, if the chamber is 7/8 I will rub them out, to me the larger chamber dosen't work as well. If the flake comes broken, I just fill the chamber, tamp and light. The ball or plug is the least used, I seldom seem to get it to the bottom of the chamber and it requires too much work as the same results can be had with the foldand stuff method.
I like to fully rub out my flake. The other methods have never really appealed to me that much. Tried the fold and stuff once, was too much maintainence.
the way I go. Back in the mid 90's I tried varying the rub out from very little to fully rubbed to try and influence the burn rate specially when taking a pipe outside in the wind... but I had no success with this so I went to my proven, fully rubbed method full time.
On occasion I try another way of dealing with a flake, but I always end back at square one and rub it out fully. At least OGS seems to be better that way, so why mess with success?

Drop the ball
I usually crumble the flake into a ball in the palm of my hand and insert said leaf into hallowed briar hollow and add flame.
And there he appears....
from the shadows. Good to see ya Lars.

Fully Rubbed
I prefer fully rubbed. I've tried the fold and stuff method a few times and it never worked that well.
