I'm not quite sure about

slartie's picture

I'm not quite sure about where I would put myself as my tobacco enjoyment comes in many forms: Cigars, cigarettes, snuff and pipes. I guess it's a habit more than anything else, but for the most part I see tobacco as recreational.

A hobby? Well I guess it could be seen as that, but then again, I don't put too much thought into the whole thing. Ah screw it - recreation it is.

Josh

I'm usually concious... Hobby not Habit

Thomas Martin's picture

Hobby- An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

Habit- A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. An addiction, especially to a narcotic drug.

Recreation- Refreshment of one's mind or body after work through an activity.

recreation

Though I voted for all of the above, I consider it primarily recreation/hobby. Since where you can smoke is severely limited, I smoke when I have a specific amount of "down time" available. It's a planned event rather than something I do without a thought. If smoking was permitted anywhere, I have little doubt it would become a habit.

I'd say...

Hobby and Recreation... I enjoy it, but do not find myself craving a pipe at all times. Cigs on the other hand, nasty habit that I must shake.

It's a

recreational hobby. There's commitment for you.

Using Tom Martin's definition

Using Tom Martin's definition, which is pretty much analogous to how I fill in the terms anyway, I am definitely in the hobby team.

Depending

morleysson's picture

depending on the day and the time of day, my pipesmoking could be any one of the choices, or all three. It really is a matter of intensity and willingness to participate in the smoke. My smoking varies directly with the stresses, or lack thereof, and the requirements made on me by the philistines with whom I come into contact. The best smokes for me have always been very late at night, when I can sit in the quiet of the backyard, and the ambient annoyances are literally non existent, and the air is clear and just cool enough to wear a sweater, and the coffee is fresh and hot, and there's no work tomorrow. I get into that most comfortable zone, and breathing and smoking are about the same. The worst smokes are always the mindless unconcious puffing that usually occurs when driving long distances and you just can't focus on the taste or the quality of the smoke, and you're constantly relighting.

I forgot to mention, that

Hobby and recreation.

Recreation

RickPiatt's picture

Well ... I can't call it a hobby since I really don't see much in common with anything else I call a hobby.

I'm not addicted because I regularly walk away from my pipes with no notice for weeks at a time then come back and fall in love with them again.

But I do enjoy myself whenever I'm in the mood so it must be recreational for me.

Recreation

Quaffer's picture

I went with recreation for lack of a better choice. It's more than just a hobby for me, as it has melded into my everyday life much more than cigar smoking ever did. However, it is nowhere near a habit since I can go for days without a pipe. Not that I like to, but there are no issues if it happens.

Now the hat, that is an addiction.

Hobby and

recreational for me. The smoking part is recreational, I enjoy a good smoke and that is all there is to it. However, there is some hobby aspects that go along with pipe smoking. To me I feel that cellaring is more hobby, kind of like a collection of sorts. Then there is also pipe making that is definately hobby but even this is also recreational.

I Said All of the Above

1OLDGI's picture

I said all of the above because Way Of Life was not one of the choices. Habit, well yeah probably but that makes it sound like something we have to do like those poor sheeple that frantically tug at pieces of rolled up paper for a quick five minute vitamin N fix. Hobby, well that probably fits too. Most pipe smokers have some sort of collection, we seek out brands we've had good luck with and enjoy discussing the various procedures and equipment associated with pipe smoking. How many cigarette smoker forums do you see on the net? Recreation, well that fits too, most of us do it because it's a way to relax a catalyst for socializing and just a fun thing to do, that's recreation. For me at least, smoking a pipe is all of this and a bit more. It's a way of looking at life, a philosophy of slow down and enjoy, the realization that it's OK, and even quite enjoyable to be different. True there are times when it's just smoking but there are those other times when you feel like the pipe is part of your identity. Without a doubt it is part of who I am and I'm a better, more patient, more tolerant and pensive person than I would be without the pipe.

All of the above

stieltje's picture

a hobby ?
Sure, I could get my nicotine fix in a lot of other ways, simpler ways. a hobby is something to put time and money into, to get something you like in return, whatever that might be..

Habit ?

I develop habits rather easy, smoking a pipe the first thing I do when waking up is one of them...

Recreation ?

I it recreational, as I get so much (en)joy(ment) out of it.

smoking my pipe is so much more than getting that nicotine fix, the taste, the whole experience itself is very very addictive, even though the addiction is not of a completly chemical nature.

Two of the Above, actually

Like Nut Brother Pipestem, this is a recreational hobby.
